Show THE DAILY CHRONICLE UTAH 3 The Best, Worst That Sports TV Has to Give Us Gymnast Medea Will Have Surgery 'f wf The U gymnastics team has enough talented, versatile, athletes that an injury to member is not going one team any to be devastating. Last year, the Utes were without the nation's top Theresa Kulikowski, who was recovering from a torn knee ligament, and they still finished fifth in the nation. This year, even with Ky lee Wagner suffering a severe ankle sprain in the season-openand missing the rest of the year, Deidra Graham and to limited just bars for the being last five weeks because of four bulging disks, the Utes are still ranked fourth in the nation. Nevertheless, sone injuries, regardless of their relative severity, can't help but wreak havocat least emotionally, if not with a team's depth. So it is with Annie Medcalf. The U sophomore, who has suffered chronic back problems throughout her career, will miss at least the remainder of the team's season, and could potentially be facing the end of her gymnastics career when she undergoes surgery to remove a tumor on her verte- t. Chronicle Sports Columnist They help make the game more interesting for those watching it on television. We know their voices. As children, we imagined our name said well-round- A by them in an excited tone as wc made a spectacular play toward the end of the game. They're the announcers. Some are good, and some arc not so good. Some make the game wonderful, and some shouldn't be allowed near a microphone ever again. Here's my top five worst and top five best. Worst: to what was going on. I do admit that he has gotten better since his first game, but that made me laugh. 4. Ron Boone 1 - Somebody get him a rule book! He played basketball professionally and he doesn't know some of the basic rules. Many Jazz fans who listen to him just want to hear that the Jazz got screwed, even when they didn't, and Boone fits that rule. re-hir- The Utes will be without a key performer for the rest of 2. Dennis Miller ABC wanted to make a point and I think it made it.. .the network ran out of ideas! He has a sense of humor few ot 5. Dick Vitale Oh, baby! It's Dickey V bringin' the show time, baby! (OK, I just had to do that.) Many can't stand him. I think he's funny and makes the game fun to watch. Let's just make sure he's the only Dickey V around. 4. Craig Bolerjack A local guy, eh? Well, he's good and he deserves it. All the girls love his dimples and all the guys like his approach. Well, many anyway. Seeing two coaches who hate each other yes, they hate each other having to look at each other and not shake hands was amazing. Race has been the subject of many coaching decisions over the past few years. Every offseason of every sport I hear a coaching decision that is disputed by many because of the fact that a person who was in consideration for the job was not hired because of the color of his skin. A guy like Marvin Lewis comes to mind. Lewis was the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, but couldn't get a head coaching job even if his life depended on it. Now he is the "defensive head coach" alongside "offensive head coach" Steve Spurrier in Washington. Seeing the Black College Association losing it n after only one coach was hired, even though their were 13 schools that needed to African-America- Minneapolis, vs Utah (7-- 7) SDSU (6-6- 322 at 9 a.m. All Day Minn. , hire a new head coach, was another incident of coaches allegedly not getting jobs because of their color. A couple of weeks ago, Nolan Richardson accused the media of not respecting him because he was having a bad season. He said that if he were a legendary white coach, the media would have let the season pass. I see where Richardson is coming from look at Joe Paterno. Penn State increasingly becomes lousier and lousier every year, but nobody says, "Fire good ol' Joe Pa." And now we have George Karl shooting his mouth off about how there were other people who should have gotten the job in Orlando instead of Rivers, but because he was black, the Magic hired him. Doc Rivers answered by basically calling Karl a bigot, and therefore an enmity was created between the two. The question of racism in the coaching world must be answered. Are the owners, general managers and athletic directors racist, or are the better coaches not black? Hmmmm... A tough question, but it has an answer, and it's not a corny answer like, "it's a little bit of both." I don't care, I am not sitting on the fence, so here it is. Racism is defined by Webster's Dictionary as, "The notion that one's own ethnic stock is superior." The fact that racism does not literally mean that ASAD WOMEN'S TENNIS at Utah Phillips 66 Nationals Medcalf is suffering from a discalled "osteoblastoma," is defined by Stedman's which Medical Dictionary, 27th edition, as order the season. i SWIMMING brae. , young person." Her surgery will take place sometime in the next seven to 10 days, and will require the removal of the tumor and the fusing of at least three vertebrae. "This is the kind of thing that puts gymnastics in perspective, said Ute coach Greg Marsden. "It is ironic, because Annie had her best competition as a Ute in our meet at Michigan just prior to this latest development." In that Feb. 22 meet, the Stow, Ohio, native tied her career high by scoring a 9.875 on the beam, and also contributed a 9.825 on the bars. The former U.S. National Team member had been limited to just five routines this year (three on bars, two on beam) but managed to total hit all five. She's hit U in career. brief routines her In spite of the nature of the injury and the surgery, though, her doctors are hopeful about her prospects of returning to training snd competition in a few months time something that has her coach and teammates hopeful as i6 well. "We are not as strong a team without Annie and are encouraged that the doctors are optimistic about her return to gymnastics," Marsden said. v ewalc!enchronicle.utah.edu Racism Is Reason for Lack of Minority Coaches people understand. And considering the fact that many people who watch Monday Night Football arc drunk anyway, I don't think a lot of people get him. 1. Bill Walton The only thing I can think of is, "He stinks!" I think NBC was just so excited to find an articulate former about care some of player, they didn't his outrageous comments. That's the worst. Here's the best five announcers around. , 1J 3. Marv Albert NISC should have stuck to its guns and not this guy. They believe that their ethnic stock is superior, and it may not even be apparent to them that they are racist. It might be just a corrupted view you unknowingly take toward everyone; however it is still there. I believe Richardson has a good point, even though he stated his point very bluntly. He was right people like Joe Paterno are treated like legends and if they have an the media still credits them for having an outstanding career. The belief that the best coaches are not black could possibly be true. Hey, who the hell knows maybe the best coaches are white, and the respective decision-maker- s want the best for their team. It is possible... However, for a guy like Marvin Lewis not to be able to get a marquee job, and then you see Ron Zook who was the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints get the job at Florida is quite questionable. Who had the better defense? Who had the better talent?
