The conference season begins, and the Utes take on the New Mexico Lobos in Albuquerque. Utah has already proven it can play against the best, as it competed well against Arizona and Cal Poly, and have now won n of their last 15. But now things change as Utah enters the conference season, and U coach Tim Esmay said his team is ready for the challenge "We're excited about opening conference play this weekend, and as usual we expect it to be a battle. There will be 27 innings of tough baseball against New Mexico," Esmay said. Like Utah, New Mexico has been on James Vermilyea, who has a 2 record. He was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb 12. The starting pitching for the Lobos doesn't match up well with the Utes. Even though the Utes beat up on a team with only one win last week, they tore the cover off the balL Nate Weese and Adam Castleton lead the team in hitting and fielding. Jason Wylie and Cheyenne Rushton will start, but the third spot is still open, and may go to Mitch Maio. Women Netters Play Rice, TCU ASAD KUDIYA Chronicle Sports Writer The Utes will need to bank on A week before playing mainly conference opponents, the U women's tennis team will have to go up against the Rice Owls and Texas Christian. Last weekend the Utes played well, but could not overcome SMU, and lost by a 3 margin. The loss had came just after a 2 victory over Idaho State. In the Rice Owls, Utah faces a subpar team with a 9 record. The team has been very streaky, and the wins have come mainly against abysmal opponents. The players that will challenge the Utes the most are Yasmin Fisher and Jeri Gonzalez, who are good singles players as well as a doubles Sheri Esrock to get a win, and hope that some of the players can upset the TCU three, four and five singles players. On paper, the Utes should be able to defeat Rice, but will have a tough time with TCU. The two games should be able to get the Utes ready for the steady flow of conference teams they will face throughout the remainder of the season. akudiya chronicle, utah. edu The Other Side of Heaven with Elder Groberg The Producer of the movie will be speaking with Elder John Groberg of the Seventies. 4-- 5-- 6-- March 17, 2002 Ok-- . 7:00 p.m team.
