Sports Editor JBP (. rm rmn mm ijTiririT Will The Utah ski team finished second tor the third time in five season meets March 28 at the NCAA Regional Championships in Anchorage, Alaska. But perhaps the most important placing was not of the Utes. but of Denver t Diversity Denver, w hich had won every Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association tournament going into Regionals, slipped to third place, and Colorado took first. That, combined with a good week of practice, has U coach Kevin Sweeney eager for a chance at the program's nth national championship. "It definitely gives a boost of confidence, seeing that Denver can be vulnerable." Sweeney said. "The reality is, it will be a close, close week of competition. We're anxious to get started." The competition is the NCAA Championships, and the women's and men's giant slalom events begin today in Anchorage. Thursday will feature nordic competitionthe men's 10K and women's 5K classical. Slalom will be held Friday, and competition wraps up Saturday with the freestyle discipline. 'As a group, we're in good shape, we're ready to go," Sweeney said. "We have good NCAA experience, and our young skiers have performed well all season... 1 think that we are going to be very strong contenders tor the title." The only concern for the Utes heading into the competition is the health of women's cross country stalwart Jorunn Oye. e Oye has a showing and four second-placfinishes under her belt this season, but a battle with a sinus infection has limited Oye's practice time this week. Her status remains a big question mark. Luckily, Oye has another day to rest before her competition Thursday. Today, her alpine counterparts take center stage. For the men, freshman Pierre Olsson has seven podium finishes this year in all alpine events. Fellow freshman Josh Whitman has recorded four ten-1- 0 finishes in the giant slalom this season. Fresh off a first place in the giant slalom at Regionals, April Mancuso looks to repeat her effort. The sophomore has two victories in the event this season, junior Annik Boulva placed fourth in the slalom last week at Regionals, and looks to improve her 15th in the GS last year. Petra Svet and Jernej Bukovec, both NCAA champions in the respective women's and men's slalom last year, were described as "title contenders" by Sweeney. first-plac- e ' ' .OS ......
