Show THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE continued from page person. On the team, Zollinger is a defender, and her main goal is to stop opposing teams from scoring. She plays out in her mind the strategy of the opposing team before they make it to her side of the field. Her biggest thrill on the field is getting her foot in the way right before an opposing player is about to take a big shot. The big thud that results gets her adrenaline pump- continued from page 9 fourth year for the Utcs, and although the discomfort is not as severe as before, it is still there. "The fractures that I do have never healed completely, and so I still have pain," Zollinger said. At one point, Zollinger decided to quit playing soccer ut CLASSIFIEDS to run honest advtrtitementt. "I'm actually smaller for a defender, so if I jump up and head the ball away from a bigger forward, that gives me a thrill, too," Zollinger said. She said her most memorable moment was against the University of Washington as a sophomore. The Utah goalkeeper was pulled out of the goal to chase the ball. The Washington player had what she thought was an open shot. Zollinger was able to stick her foot out just in time to knock the ball away from the goal and preserve the win for the Utes. Zollinger has been playing soccer since she was in kindergarten. She is not sure what she wants to do after her eligibility is up at Utah. She has considered trying out for the Women's United Soccer Association, but she is till uncertain. "My parents want me to stop, but I'm not sure," she said. An exercise and sports science major, Zollinger would like be to be involved in sports when she has a career, even if it's not necessarily as an athlete. "I'd love to work with athletes in strength and conditioning," she said. Strength and conditioning two things a player with persistent back problems knows much about. The back of a human being is very strong. Yet Lesa Zollinger has proven that no muscle is as strong as the heart. lqamerochronicle. utah. edu full-til- t, CHRONY e ing. She also enjoys trying to knock a pass away by timing her jump so that she is able to go right over the opposing player because of her health, but after doing well with her club team at nationals during the summer, she decided her back would let her play after all. "Right after that, I called Utah coach Amy WinslowJ and said, 'Amy, I'm good! I'm coming back," Zollinger said. Zollinger decided to return only after determining she could go as she is not an athlete less than her best. "I'm not the type of player that can give half effort," she said. "I decided that if I was going to play, I was going to have to go and not worry about it. I've learned in sports psychology that if you arc timid, you are more likely to get hurt. I just want to play." Zollinger uses her memory for motivation. When she wants to give up. she remembers the months she spent at home on the couch with a back brace around her. She remembers how much she missed physical activity, and the desire to play comes right back. "She has one of the biggest hearts on the team," Winslow said. "She plays with a lot of passion for the game and commitment to being the best she can be. She is also a very talented athlete." Ute assistant coach Jim Winslow praised her persistence. "Lesa Zollinger has talent, but she has never gotten by on her talent," he said. "You can't help but love kids like that. I can't say enough good things about Lesa." Neither can her teammates. "She's awesome," said Amy Kofoed, a Ute forward. "She's one of the best headers on the team. She's the best." "She's really solid. You can always count on her," added freshman forward Julie Herdic. "She's a great all-o- sity of Utah cross country team, which competed in the Stanford Invitational with a field comprised of more than 50 teams. The Utah men's team had great overall success with a fourth-placit in which finish, great position puts to try and win the Mountain West Conference championship. Teren Jameson took first for the third meet in a row and won by 12 seconds. Colby Fraier ran extremely well by finishing 15th overall. He was the Offensive Rookie of the Year last year in the NFL Sure, a coach must take responsibility if his team doesn't win. Coach Mac has taken that responsibility. He is a great coach, and don't let last year's fluke of a season make you think the University of Utah will be changing coaches anytime soon. 25-3- 11 Cross Country Had Success at Stanford Meet GAMERO I) 200J TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1030 A F, drinkt; Ouettiont? or Hna.
