Show THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE A Religious Campaign Unnecessary Stop Editor. Thursday night a large group of political junkies learned who might be in the Associated Students of the University of Utah next ear, and who would definitely not be in ASUU government next year. It is an accomplishment to be able to go the final round, but ASUU elections should net requirt more than one round. Hie concept of primary elections and final elections is meaningful in normal government politics. It makes sense for parties to select which candidates will run for offices so that votes do not get split by rivals in the same party. ' Following these smaller elections with final elections is a "good way to give all voters a say in their government The primary elections or campus are, just a means of whittling down the choices that students have to make when the final elections come around. But there is no point to limit ing the number of candidates on ;the final election ballots. Doing so just means that those running have to campaign twice for the same votes,. It makes the elections more confusing. , ASUU should get rid of the. primary elections. It would fce better if candidates only have to campaign once, and voters only .have to vote once, JASON V, MORGAN SenKK Computer Science MONDAY, remember..." He paused as I prepared myself for a campaign slogan or a plea to vote for Innovation in the final elections. That's what I expected and would expect from any Editor: Who is the Innovation party? I thought Innovation was just one of "And recent elections for posts in the Associated Students of the University of Utah. As it turns out, this thought was wrong. As I spoke to more people on campus around the time of the primary election, I began to hear rumors that the members of the Innovation party were largely, if not entirely, members Saints Student Assoof the Latter-da- y ciation. This bit of information didn't bother me. I had hoped religion would not enter the political sphere and would go largely unacknowledged by those who were campaigning. My hopes were proven wrong. Before I tell you about my experience, let me tell you two things I am not. I am not running (and have not run) for any office in ASUU, and I am not a member of the LDS Church. I had hoped these two facts were unrelated, but it was demonstrated to me that they arc. Last Thursday, March I, I was on campus in the early evening. As I left the J. Willard Marriott Library, I political campaigners. the political parties campaigning on campus for my vote in the most . - What "And was, got remember...the Church is true." I stopped and turned to him, completely taken aback by these unexpected and highly inappropriate words. All I could say was, "Excuse me?" To which he responded, "Never mind" and walked away from me. How often had this attempt to find a common religious ground been utilized to sway an individual's vote? Innovation, or at least this representative of the Innovation party, has introduced religion into this campaign. Now that it has been utilized as a campaign tool, I can't believe religion won't be used by the Innovation party in making important decisions regarding how student clubs are funded. S How would groups receive any help from Innovation party leadership? How can I know that religion will be kept out of these types of decisions when religion has not been kept out of the campaigning process? The only function his comment served was to alienate me from his party. I am not opposed to being represented by a member of the LDS Church. I am, however, opposed to people making their religious beliefs relevant to campus politics. MICHELE BURCHETT I MARCH 5, 2001 Pope wouldn't let Henry VIII get a divorce. They, like myself, focus on the Beauty Way. I believe people today concern themselves too much with how others view them. This is what this issue is really about. AIM has made plans to protest at the University of North Dakota commencements this spring. I do not see the beauty in protesting at this function where other native students would be graduating while their loved ones are attending to honor their new graduate. Nor do I see benefit of threatening to hurt the university economically. I feel honor in Native American mascots being used alongside the Trojans and Vikings who were also great warriors in our history. I don't believe mascots are chosen with the intent to degrade people. I hope that such recognition like the University of Utah Utes will be accepted and never changed. I greatly appreciate your attention, and hope that you understand my point of view.
