Show jT MAR 01 - 2001 by Brooke Johnson fl FA directing student Adam Eisenstein's last production in the Lab Theatre had four children violent deaths in a Serbia. His latest production is William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night or What You Will," which begins with the line: "If music be the food of love, play on." Twelfth Night" is a play about through beautiful lana few bumbling comeIt has guage. dians and a fool with a guitar who sings sweet melodies. The story could not be further from Eisenstein's production of "Family Stories: Belgrade" than I am from Shakespeare. Luckily, Eisenstein's talent for creating interesting productions is not limited to political plays. 'Twelfth Night" is set on a deserted tennis court in a nondescript modern time. Twins Viola (Sarah Jones) and Sebastian (Chuck are separated in a storm, each presuming the other is drowned. Viola disguises herself as a man, Cesario, and goes to Duke Orsino's court in hopes of being able to comfort Olivia (Shannon XJL play-actin- g war-ravag- love-makin- g Oud-erkir- love-struc- k down-playe- d NOTICE OF PROPOSED TUITION INCREASE R4 Dashow said, "you either fall into avant garde jazz or trippy hippie jam." Dashow said the band is not so much like Galactic, Widespread Panic, the Grateful Dead or Phish to be embraced by the hippie crowd, yet not so much like improvisation-a- l z jazz to be picked up by Karl fans and the Maceo Parker, fans. Denson, These crowds, which seem to grab onto anything shuffled under their respective categories, providing an instant fan base for many artists, tend to ignore bands like Discohesive because their style isn't so easy to classify, said Dashow. And I thought that was supposed to be a good thing. Really, the guys of Discohesive fall somewhere in between these genre generaliiations. They could comfortably tour with just about any of those aforementioned bands because they incorporate some of everything into their music, give or take a touch of creative musical juxtaposition and a kick of Rage Against the Machine, indie-stylThe end result is what Dashow calls "groove music with an edge." He's got that right. "As far as theory of music goes, I'm an idiot," Dashow said. "I listen, and I know how to listen to what other people are doing." The members of Discohesive have a mature ability to predict what the others are going to do with an improvisation. "Jesse Bishop and I have been playing since we were juniors in high school I've never really played with anyone but him," Dashow said. "We listen to each other and try to make sense from what we were doing in the past." Discohesive has played Utah before at both O'Shucks and The Zephyr. The band is looking forward to another stop in Salt Lake attraction between males or between females. He says,Tho5e kinds of sexual tensions have existed forever, and so it's just a matter of exploring it..in terms of acting." On stage, the sexual tension between Cesario and Duke Orsino is enough for an Aaron Spelling soap. But when was the last time you saw two men passionately holding each television? other on prime-tim- e isn't there quite as much Though tension between Cesario and Olivia because one is costumed as a male and the other as a female, the staging of Olivia's attempt to woo Cesario pushes tradition aside. Hollinger's energy (as Olivia) as she pins the disguised youth to a table is fascinating to watch because it falls between humor and eroticism Much of the play falls between categories. The pranks played on Malvolio (Joshua Grant) are comic, but they are also cruel. Eisenstein says, "There's a certain dark edge to the practical joking, and I think the idea is to get the audience to be both laughing at it, and then feeL..bad about it." This exploration of both categories is part of what makes this play just as interesting to watch as Holiinger) with whom the Duke is in love, arid who has recently lost her father and brother. Orsino pavid Neisler) sends Cesario to woo Olivia, but of course, she falls in love with the disguised Viola. In the meantime, Sebastian is wandering around with a sailor, and mistaken identities abound. If you don't already know the plot to Twelfth Night" this probably seems ridiculous and confusing. But ridicule and confusion are essential parts of a Shakespearean comedy, and also where much of the humor lies. Though the audience and actors took a little while to warm up to the classic British comedy, Sir Andrew the bumbling knight pavid S allay), and Sir Toby (also played by Neisler) presented a great show. Eisenstein the bawdy humor in the play partly because audience members would need a book of footnotes to understand the jokes, and partly because the play doesn't need it "It is very easy in this play to drop in a lot of comic shriek. I just don't think it is necessary," he says. Instead, Eisenstein focused on the lovers and the possibility of DISCOHSSSVe continued from page - RED The University of Utah student tuition rates. invited to attend Ail self-obsess- e. City.
