IfedTtfe ht ss?&S5 am sure that by writing this letter, I will be attacked by those who disagree with me, and I welcome your criticism. But be sure to get some things right first. I am heterosexual. I am active in my ohosen religion. I was raised in a heterosexual and LDS environment. What I say is my belief about human nature, and no one is being forced to accept it. I just would like to say what I CEDAW continued from page 6 I are going to give a child a good, loving home. It has been my experience thai homosexual couples have a lot bigger chance of staying together (and being faithful) than heterosexual couples. I don't know why, but they do. Isn't this something important in a child's life? I believe that it is much more beneficial to the child to be in a loving home than a heterosexual home. Just because someone is heterosexual does not make them perfect. Also, growing up in a homosexual household does NOT mean that the child will be homosexual, but it does mean that the child will probably be a lot d more and accepting of differences. I believe that the worid would be a much better place if everyone were understanding and accepting of the differences in the world. If people were more we would feel. It doesn't matter if someone is het- erosexual, homosexual, bisexual or asexual. The issue is if they are going to give a child a loving and stable home to grow up in. Please stop thinking about what you believe is "immoral" or not, but what is in the child's best interest. Children don't care about sexual preference or religion they don't even understand these things, and won't until later. They need caring families. open-minde- The creators of CEDAW have a challenge to the United States to ratify their petition by September of this year. Take the time this Women's Week to think about what has' been called the Women's International Bill of Rights. Find out about CEDAW for yourself. There is plenty of information about it on the Internet. Then contact your state senator about signing the petition. The U.S., because of its prominent position in world politics, should take a visible and firm stand on women's rights. Jt appears that we have a few things to learn ourselves. issued "Poppy- You people should reread the Declaration of Independence as well as the Constitution before making such declarations concerning my rights. You are free to give up your rights to any political body or mob of humanity you like, but you may not so easily cast aside mine, or those of the millions of others who would defend, or have defended, individual liberty. Our basic human rights come from a higher authority, call it anything you like based on your own spiritual convictions, but it is beyond persons or any body of Homo sapiens. Just because a portion of humanity has decided to reject deity (and a minor proportion at that), it does not follow that their arrogance should dictate to the rest of us, nor remove the tenets on which this nation was founded. The aforementioned Declaration of Independence states in absolute terms that our rights are indeed inalienable and are creator-deriveThe idea of separation of church and state does not mean separation of God and state, and the founders clearly did not support such partitioning. Think about it even today it is appropriate. Ninety-fiv- e percent of the world believes in a divine being, while of Americans are religious and many more are individually, or at least loosely, spiritual. How can it possibly make sense for the default posi d. two-thir- ds tion to favor godlessness, the minority opinion? Morality is likewise not a thing that you can hammer at until it fits a useful shape. At its heart, moral conduct is quite unchanging and an important player in respect for human rights. Honesty, compassion, commitlove, effort, ment, loyalty, justice...do any of these words sound familiar? Throughout recorded history, these basic values have been almost universally lauded, though seldom enough practiced. Where law has ardently recognized these and other "virtues," prosperity and a measure of peace within society have been realized. When despotism or mob injustice have held sway, these moral attributes are held as little worth, or held only for a select patronage. In the 1940s in Germany, people decided their own moral code, as did the Southern plantation owners and the KKK, as did segments our own society when they huddled America's indigenous population onto shameful reservations, and when they bombed the people of a sovereign nation because of something it might do to someone else; I hope that I need not elaborate. My point is that people are not the best protectors of themselves or their own rights. They are downright shady when it comes to protecting the rights of others, especially those with some attribute that is different from themselves. Clearly, a popular vote on the issue is absurd. (The mere thought scares the bejeebies out of me!) So, no offense, but I don't trust you with my rights, and you shouldn't trust me with yours. I suggest we rather consider them graven in stone by the force that shaped our consciousness of them.
