Show 24 1980s continued from page 23 systems," Sperry told The Chronicle. As could be expected, the two managed to alienate just about every student group on campus, from the Saint Student Association to the greeks. But the politi Latter-da- y savvy-yet-novi- r nf i cians always had an answer. As far as making LDSSA upset, Sperry countered with the fact that he was a returned missionary and that being a zone leader on his mission had given him "vast leadership abilities." Kaly countered the greeks' objection to proposed funding cuts by promising that the Grateful Dead would ccme to the U if the greeks voted for him. n ' Gt Ji THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 2000 FEBRUARY 28, FOUNDERS DAY COMMEMORATIVE ISSUE DEATH TO ASUU Kaly and Sperry trudged through the countless debates during February of 198S, making students laugh and administrators shake their heads along the way. In one forum, Kaly said he and Sperry were going to destroy ASUU as people knew it because it had stopped serving the interests of the student body which generally drove to campus, took classes, and drove back off to work. "ASUU has been a puppet organization fulfilling the political aspirations of young Republican high noses, as they sniff their way from college to Capitol Hill," the party's platform stated. "We now see that it is useless to try to destroy the bloated cow ASUU because the bloated cow is a dead cow, a rotting corpse with flies circling around it. trying to breed larvae in its decaying flesh. Our major purpose is to have fun. Also, it's the easiest way to get some good music played up at school." While Kaly and Sperry never shied away from throwing out a bar- rage of sometimes disgusting and always amusing sound bytes, the two candidates did actually get seiious from time to time, "We aim to defy tradition," the two said during the campaign. "All students pay for student fees. Ail students should benefit" During the campaign, several students were asked if they cared about the fate of ASUU and the elections of 1988 and the responses mirror the apathy of the time. One respondent, Ken Jolley, said he didn't care. "Why? Apathy" he said. "I'm disillusioned with this school as a whole, maybe because it's a research school." THE RESULTS The apathy of the student body reflected itself in the somewhat meager turnout at the voting booths, with a turnout of 3,314. These votes were spread out over five parties due to problems with a primary election conducted a week before something many people speculated helped Who Cares? While the losing candidates all expressed support for Kaly and Sperry, some students weren't so kind. A rumcr that Kaly and Sperry would be impeached began immediafter ' the results were ately announced and several outgoing ASUU officers lamented the Who Cares? victory. "I feel sorry for the U,K said Richard Smith, a member of the elections committee. "The joke is on the student body." Despite the dissent expressed by some, Kaly and Sperry were elated following the announcement. wvm.CYMSA9ia.caH "I think students are saying they are sick of ASUU as it is and they want to see something more," Sperry said After an odd inauguration, which included Native American ceremonies rather than the typical ball, Kaly and Sperry slowly settled into office and, interestingly, began distancing themselves from the anarchic- rhetoiic of their campaign, proving once again they wouldn't be pigeon-holeOn the day of the inauguration, Kaly said that previous ASUU administrators had "done a lot of good things no one knows about" And due to Redbook (ASUU's constitution) stipulations, the new student leaders were prohibited from raffling off cabinet posts. Instead, Kaly and Sperry simply let huge committees form themselves and choose from amongst their al-apathetic d. members who would fill the posts. Kaly also permitted former ASUU officers to join his administration-someth- ing he promised he wouldn't do because ASUU was full "of elitists" because it would be unfair to discriminate against any student. The move angered some, but demonstrated Kaly's desire to take his position somewhat seriously. As Sperry grappled with how the Assembly should be run, Kaly quickly shed the image of apathy he had used to win the election to attempt to improve how things were run at the U. He became involved with state politics concerning higher education and reneged on some of his campaign promises for the better of the student body, such as when he self-servi- mwmm r Ml ' Our Wmtersreiger Micro Stone Grinder applies a factory-fres- h finish to your skis' bases and edges. Amazingly, Kaly, Sperry and the rest of the ASUU administration refused monetary compensation for their jobs, a decision that saved ASUU nearly $15,000 for 1988. Initially, Kaly and Sperry even refused tuition stipends until they realized the stipends were simply a gift from Utah and didn't come out of ASUU funds. And for two gays who promised to not give a damn, Kaly and Sperry sure got hot under the collar when funding for higher education came up. During the month of October 1988, Sperry held weekly protests at the Utah State Capitol and, call it poetic justice if you will, nobody cared. "I know everyone has their own way of saying something, and I'm not expecting 20,000 students here," Sperry said. "But it's one thing to bitch about tuition increases on the way to class, and it's another thing to go and do something about it...I just dare all students who want to take a political stand to do so now." Kaly took his position as seriously as Sperry when it came to representing the student body. Kaly often lob- see 1980s, page 25 |
