Show 14 The Daily Utah Chronicle Monday, March 29, 1999 Utes Drop Two, Drop to Last Place Sterling Clifford Chronicle Sports Writer It has been an season for the Utah baseball team, and this past weekend was no exception. The Utcs hosted the New Mexico Lobos e over the weekend for a series and a chance to escape the bottom of the rankings. Unfortunately for the Utcs, they last-pla- three-gam- couldn't make it happen. The Lobos took two of the three games in the scries, winning Friday and Sunday with the Utcs taking Saturday's contest. As has been their habit, the Utcs dropped the first game of the scries on Friday, losing by just one run. Utah held a 2 lead after six innings, but New Mexico came out hard in the seventh, pounding in five runs and shutting out the Utcs in the bottom of the inning. Utah would score again in the eighth and ninth, but the Utcs fell short of the four runs they needed to force a tenth. "We're having a hard time getting things done early," said Utah coach Tim Esmay, "and when you play at home, you need to do that." New Mexico was the team getting it done early on Saturday, as the Lobos jumped out to a 1 lead after the third inning. Utah scored in the third, fifth and seventh to pull within three. In the eighth, with two outs and three men on, double to tic Ryan Hilts hit a three-ru- n the game at eight. The Utcs pulled out the win in the ninth when Nate Wccse knocked in Eric Wallace. e Despite the win and the heroics, Esmay was less than excited about how his team played on Saturday. "We were lucky," said Esmay. "Wc got some runs late, but wc needed to do more early in the game." Utah senior Lance Erickscn was looking for his first win in conference play on Sunday, and proceeded to pitch nine of the best innings he has pitched this season. In a rare defensive battle, Erickscn and the Utcs gave up just three runs through nine innings. But they only scored three of their own. Ryan Bailey, who became the third Utah pitcher to get three wins on Saturday, came out of the bullpen to start the 10th on Sunday, and kept the Lobos with out a run until the 12th. A RBI single from New Mexico's John Armstrong turned out to be the end for Utah when the Ute bats couldn't respond in the bottom of the inning. "These arc the tough ones to lose," said Ericksen. "It was a good, tough battle all the way, and wc were just a little short at the end." Bailey was credited with his first loss of the season in a game Esmay was not see baseball page 15 "'"' avsT&F ..t.nzM : , ,' V' '' " - ."i. fix 6-- late-gam- f The Lobos s'd by Utah on Sunday and won two games over the weekend.
