Show Friday, March 5, 1999 The Daily Utah Utah Softball Plays First WAC Series of Year After two tournaments under its belt, the University of Utah softball team plays its first WAC contests this set at weekend, with a three-gam- e San Diego State. The Utes have amassed a 6 record in the two tournaments, posting a 3 record at the Arizona State and going 3 last Classic (Feb. weekend at the Troy Cox Softball Classic, hosted by New Mexico State. In the Troy Cox Classic, Utah tied for third place, as catcherthird-basema- n Stacey Farnworth was named to team for her monthe ster showing at the plate. Farnworth, although with fewer plate appearances, leads Utah in batting average (.412) and is tied for the h with two home runs. Utah's other home run leader, Sunny Smith, is off to a quick start this year, second on the team with a .370 avg. Also, Smith leads the team in hits (10), and RBI with five. Simonich ranks ioth on the qualifying list in the 3,000, with a time of The last competition for Simonich was two weeks ago at the WAC Championships, a race which he won and earned honors. Stacey Rhineer was the only athlete to qualify on the women's team. Rhineer qualified for nationals in the triple jump during the WAC Championships, winning the conference title with a jump of 4204.75. Rhineer came from behind to win the triple jump at WAC, improving by nearly a foot in her final jump. Rhineer had an outstanding WAC sick bed. Following last weekend's six- - game split at New Mexico State, the Utes feel ready to pick it up a notch in its first WAC encounter of the season. Rhineer's WAC triple jump set a new school record, and was given honors in both the triple and long jump. Ar this weekend's nationals, the top eight athletes in each event will be awarded status. "With the fight Jeff has in him, my guess is that he'll be in the top eight. He should come home with it," said Utah track coach Mike Jones. "Stacey is only out of the top eight by four inches. If she has a good jump she could very well make but she does lack experience." The NCAA championship wraps up the indoor season completely for Utah.
