Show Friday, The Daily Utah February 26, 1999 Chronicle 11 -- Baseball in San Francisco for One Final Tune Up Before WAG Sterling Clifford Chronicle Sportswriter The Utah baseball team will make its second trip to California this weekend for a three-gam- e series with San Francisco. San Francisco will be Utah's final chance to tune up before the start of the WAC season. "It will be good for our pitchers to pitch against a good offense," said Utah Coach Tim Esmay. "I didn't think we played well last week." Last week, the Utes won two series with games in a three-gam- e Mesa State in Colorado, but one win went to extra innings after Mesa scored nine runs in the bottom of the ninth. San Francisco is this weekend against a 5 Utah team with two of the top five home run hitters in the WAC. Utah freshman Adam Castleton is ninth in the WAC in batting average, which is bad news for San Francisco. Ryan Johnerson is second in the WAC in RBI with 18 in 13 games, which is also bad news for San Francisco. What is bad news for the Utes is that San Francisco has some bats of its own. "San Francisco can swing the bat," says Esmay, "they have some power." Next weekend the Utes start conference play with yet another California road trip. Utah will visit the 7 San Diego State Aztecs for the first WAC series of the year. 9-- 7-- 5-- going into 6 Utah Softball Travels To New Mexico For Tourney Erik Martinez Chronicle Asst. Sports Editor While major league ball players are sweating into shape in Arizona and Florida, the University of Utah softball team will be working out the kinks in Las Cruces, N.M., at the Troy Cox Softball Classic. This will be the second tournament the Utes have played in this season. Utah kicked off the season at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament (Feb. where it went upsetting No. 21 Florida State and No. 19 Alabama. This weekend's tournament is made up of 11 teams, with pool play on Friday and Saturday, followed by bracket play Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Utah's schedule for pool play begins today at noon, as it takes on Wichita 2-- 3, State. Next, the Utes will play the toughest team in its pool, No. 22 Minnesota at 4 p.m. Saturday, the Utes have back-to-ba- games, playing Arkansas at 2 p.m., followed by host New Mexico State at 4 p.m. "We were glad to have this past weekend off. We pushed hard getting ready for that first weekend and our kids needed the time off," said Utah coach Mona Stevens. "We'd like to go down and do very well this weekend. The pool of teams in this tournament runs the gamut. There are some strong teams there like Oregon State, Minnesota and New Mexico State, but our goal is to go down and win the tournament." In the five games that Utah played at the Fiesta BowlCoca-Col- a Classic, and led Smith Johnson Amberly Sunny the Utes with three RBI a piece. Six Utes are batting over .300 at this early point in the season, with only four of the six registering double digits in at bats. Of the four, Molly McLean, Sunny Smith, and Amberly Johnson are all batting .357, with five hits each. Swimmers Look to Make Waves at WAC Competition U Oklahoma City, Okla, is the site of the 1999 WAC Championships for women's swimming and diving competition. Utah is one of 14 WAC schools competing for the conference championship. The meet began Thursday and runs through Saturday, Feb. 27. Though the Utes were 7 overall and in WAC competition, they still have had numerous impressive performances throughout the course of 4-- 3 the season. Those performances bode well for Utah at the meet. Three individual swimmers have been particularly good this season. Heidi Hausknccht, Molly Lauber and Heike Kutz all turned in solid individual seasons. The relay teams also were a big part of the team's successes. school Hausknecht broke an record in the 100 fly with her time of 56.63. She also has the best Utah time of 1999 in the 100 free (52.36). Utah jumped from four to No. 3 in the rankings, after beating No. 4 LSU ), last Friday and No. 18 ). Florida on Monday In both meets, Utah set season-hig- h team scores, and set new season-high- s in each of the four events. But the Aggies may prove to be Utah's toughest challenge yet. The Red Rocks' last two wins came in the Huntsman Center, where Utah enjoys the biggest crowds in collegiate gymnastics, averaging 10438 per meet. Also, Utah State has yet to lose this year, racking up an 0 record thus far, including an upset win over No. 18 Washington. Utah is also undefeated at and is looking for a solid foad meet after finishing with its worst score of the year especially with this being our third meet of the week," said Utah Coach tri-me- et Greg Marsden. "We've recovered nicely from our debacle at Arizona with two good home meets. Now we need to have a similar effort on the road, since we'll be on the road for NCAA Regionals." History is on the side of the Red Rocks tonight, as Utah holds a 70-- 3 advantage over the Aggies (20-- 2 in Logan), with a 0 record against Boise State. Also, Utah has not lost to the Aggies since 1979, and has rattled off the last (196.375-195.150- (196.975-193.750- 7-- 66 competitions involving the two teams. Utah State's perfect record may be somewhat misleading as well. While the Aggies have yet to lose a 8-- meet this year, their 7-- 0, when she was part of the Utes' 400 medley relay team that smashed the Northern Arizona Aquatic Center event time by over four seconds. Lauber, who a year ago became the first U swimmer to qualify for national competition, has again qualified this year. Her time of 1:03.13 in the 100 breast got her an automatic entry into the NCAAs. She also has Utah's top 1999 times in the 50 free and the 200 breast. Kutz leads the Utes in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Her time of 56.71 in the 100 back is both a Utah record and the second best time in the WAC this year. As for the relay events, Utah has won 12 times this season and set school records in the 200 and 400 medley relays. The Utes are ranked second in the WAC in both of those events. Therefore, if Utah can turn in some solid performances at the WAC competition, Lauber may well have some company at this year's NCAAs.
