FRESHMAN continued from page 14 Kulikowski, the first alternate for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team, tore her ACL in July of 1997 and hadn't competed until the Stanford meet. "I was very nervous going into tonight, but also very excited at the same time," said Kulikowski. "The crowd helped break the tension and made it a lot of fun." Prior to the meet, Kulikowski didn't anticipate competing in all four events against Stanford. Expecting to compete in only the three events which she won, Kulikowski was a change to the vault last-seco- line-u- p. didn't know I was going to be doing vault until about 10 minutes before the meet," said Kulikowski. "It probably helped out not knowing I was going on vault, because I didn't have to worry and think about it. Usually if I think about it too much it just gets in "I party for just one freshman. Deidra Graham had an debut of her own, posting a 9.9 on floor, and a 9.85 on bars. Graham also impressed the judges on her two exhibition events (vault and beam), putting up a potential 39 plus night of her own. "I think getting the first meet out of the way will really help a lot, and I don't think I'll be as nervous from here on out," said Graham. "I'm kind of glad I went exhibition on beam because that's GYM Kulikowski's quick start to her collegiate career helped Utah post its second highest opening meet score in school history. While the former U.S. National team member excelled, she was not alone in earning top marks for the Red Rocks. Three (Kulikowski, Angie Leonard, Theresa Wolf) posted scores above 39. But it was Kulikowski's three individual wins, along with the title that made the most significant impression on the 10,000 plus fans watching the Red Rocks 1999 opener. Due to the competitive nature of her Olympic trials and international competitions, the friendly team and a supportive crowd atmosphere that a home collegiate meet provides was a pleasant surprise for Kulikowski. "Normally, all my other competitors wanted me to fall. It was just an experience that I wasn't expecting because I've never been in a situation like this," said Kulikowski. "It's just incredible." continued from page 14 my feelings that we're stronger and much deeper than we have been in recent memories," said Marsden. "Even the exhibition people did a great job. The only problem for me is it makes my decision for who competes to count, difficult. That's a great problem to have." Theresa Wolf was the third Red Rock score over 39 to post an 17 the event that I tend to get nervous on." for Denise Jones also went the Red Rocks, and barring one slip on the beam, she could have easily been in the running for the title. Jones scored a 9.8 on vault, a 9.7 on bars, and a 9.85 on floor. The one slip on beam however, dropped her to a 9.2 for the event, dampening an otherwise solid round of gymnastics. Wolf peaked on the floor exercise (9.850), one of four Red Rocks to beat every Stanford Cardinal on the floor. "These routines that I'm doing now are all upgraded from where I ended last year," said Wolf. "I put in a lot of hard work.
