Either way, porn mogul Larry Flynt is surely causing a stir in the capital. While most people know Flynt as the publisher of Hustler magazine, few are familiar with the man's previous engagements with the Supreme Court. All the Flynt hoopla emerged e late last year with a advertisement offering close to $i million for anybody who could prove an illustrious sexual Some full-pag- encounter with a well-recogniz- ed personality on Capitol Hill. His intentions were to attack the government high-ranki- going on in today's society. The event has opened so many eyes that many are comparing Flynt's case to the work of Kenneth Starr. Plans to expose all the personal indiscretions of certain government figures is anticipated to be released later in offi- cials who thrived on hypocrisy. Although the majority of the public has turned its back to the crippled man, Rep. Bob Livingston stepped down due to investigations of his personal live conducted by Larry Flynt. Add in widespread media coverage, including everyone from CNN to Larry King, and the issue turns more of America's heads to the"sexual bounty hunting" that's being Flynt Report." While Larry Flynt may be one of the most unattractive and tasteless men in America, he brings up several good points. The purpose of Flynt's investigations is get the Republican dominated congress to drop their investigations of the President Bill Clinton's sex life. He has succeeded in pointing out the absurdity of sexual witch hunts. He has also succeeded in pointing out the damage moral crusades can have on our political process. Unwittingly, he has made clear the difference between a person's private conduct and violations of the law. Flynt uncovered embarrassing details of Bob Livingstone's and Bob Barr's personal lives. I'm an author of books on the history of river running on the Colorado River. When my first book came out in about 1985, 1 took it to Waking Owl Books, having just seen an article about Patrick wherein he talked about how supportive he was of Wednesday, January 13, 1999 local authors. So I talked to Patrick, and showed him my work, which was published by the University of Utah Press and has always received good reviews (and is now in its second edition). He took one look at my book, didn't even want to read it, and sniffed, "Well, it doesn't meet our standards," or something equally rude. At any rate, I remember walking out of there thinking, "I'll never set foot in there again." And I never did. Call it sour grapes if you want, but I know I'm not alone in this feeling about Waking Owl. I hear this every day, how the poor independent booksellers are being driven out of business by the evil chains. But I cannot think of a time I went into The King's English Book Shop when I didn't feel I An American Daughter Is a Disgrace Editor: 1 recently attended the Pioneer Theater Company's "American Girl." Although Larry Flynt has been denied legitimacy with his ties with Hustler, the ship has come in as he proves to be one of the innovative figures in bringing attention to the hybrid mixture of politics and pornography. t TSIM JTOD&E H pSESSro If fKSfiPH OLYMPIC 1 Mount Olympus Had Its Sex Scandals, Too u 1 Spencer Harrison Chronicle Opinion Columnist GREECE ATHENS, hearings Mount Olympus today. Most of the day was spent in debates split upon partisan lines between Olympians and demigods. The debates have become more intense following Zeus' public apology and his lightning strike against Sparta. The Olympian majority was largely unmoved by the public spectacles. Hcstia, goddess of the home, said, "His apology doesn't go far enough. How can Zeus expect us to believe that he didn't engage in what he understood as scvual activity? Just bcc.iusc he turn. J into a bull to seduce Europa doesn't change anything. Sex is sex." The' Olympian investigation of Zeus' extramarital activities has been hindered by a substantial lack of evidence. While they have sent Jason and the Argonauts to find the golden fleece which they hope contains DNA evidence that can link Zeus to the bull that impregnated Europa, there have been other difficulties. The other mortal woman who claimed to have an affair with Zeus, Io, has disappeared. A search for Io has been hindered by Hera, Zeus' wife, and Aphrodite, goddess of love. Both goddesses represent the only moderate Olympians who have clearly sided with Zeus and his demigod followers. Hera told reporters earlier, "I'm not some little goddess standing by her man, and I categorically deny turning Io into a cow during a jealous rage." When asked about her alleged involvement in sending a gadfly to pester her husband's alleged lover, Hera responded, "I didn't have anything to do with it. No, not to the best of my recollection." These developments have enraged the Olympian party. They firmly contend Zeus has not only used his celestial position for amorous positioning, but has also used his powers and influence to lie about the incidents and subsequently cover them up. Heracles, the demigod minority leader (known as Hercules to the Romans and future television viewers), has been relying upon his virtues of strength and endurance in order to help Zeus. When asked why Heracles has shown so much support for Zeus, he answered, "Because I like what he Why should we care? They're immor- tal. If they are not having sex with our women then they'll find some other way to screw us. Remember Pandora's Box?" a local Athenian asked. does." He later clarified the statement by adding, "I mean, I like his leadership." Another demigod supporter, Orpheus, doesn't defend Zeus' conduct. Instead he has vocally attacked the conduct of what he calls "an. unfair Olympian majority set upon destroying the majesty of godship." "I don't condone the actions of Zeus. They were improper, immoral, immortal, and imaginative," Orpheus said. "However, they do not rise to the level of what has historically been considered an impeachable offense." Orpheus continued, "If we, as the divinity of Greece, allow ourselves to become divided about as minuscule a matter as sexual interaction with mortals, then we will stand as fools for all eternity. Our children, both heavenly and mortal, will wonder what in Hades their parents were doing." Orpheus concluded by admonishing the Olympians to consider Zeus' recent attack upon Sparta and the attacks by Athenian infantry that will surely follow. "Our thoughts should be with our troops. I mean, our worshippers." In reference to the attacks upon Sparta, Olympian Majority Leader Apollo questioned Zeus' timing: "His attacks upon Sparta are further proof that he is acting on a personal vendetta. Every time we get closer to the truth, he throws lightning at someone, and then his supporters beg us to think about the mortals. Who is thinking about the welfare of the mortals when Zeus' wife is turning them into cows?" Probably the strangest development in the case is the public's complacency. Most Athenians simply want the arguments on Mount Olympus to end. "Why should we care? They're immortal. If they are not having sex with our women then they'll find some other way to screw us. Remember Pandora's Box?" a local Athenian asked. Other Athenians disagreed. "What we are seeing is a celestial struggle to define morality, a morality which will eventually define our existence. I don't want illicit sexual scandals and extramarital actions running rampant in the future," said Starrticus, a hero and Olympian supporter. However, the Oracle at Delphi predicts that, centuries from now, similar adulterous entanglements will cause a general disbelief in Teutonic mythology, Christianity, British sovereignty and American democracy. Concerning these predictions, Starrticus said, "We can't have gods engaging in sexual activities with mortals. It undermines the very moral fabric that they were invented to uphold." |
