Show Thursday, December 3, 1998 The Daily Utah Chronicle - 9 Pistol Team Gains Impressive Results New Several individuals who are either associated with, or members of, the University of Utah Collegiate Pistol Team scored impressive results and won resounding victories at the State Pisto! Championships. The competition is comprised of different six international-styl- e events used in the Olympics, Pan Am Games and World Cup meets. Teammate Jon Miller took second place in the event, and two more members of the Utah squad finished in the top five. Both Sutherland and Miller have subsequently qualified for the 1999 USA Pistol Championship. Jake Parrish WINN continued from page 8 Eric Walden 7-- Those are just three of the games. Many other teams around the nation did the same thing to other teams. I hate it when teams run up the score. I don't think it is proper in sports, and it certainly isn't fun to watch. But the BCS promotes this type of behavior. not even that strategy worked. order to remedy this problem, teams in the future won't schedule some of the lower-tie-r teams in the country. That means, in a nutshell, that the University of Utah, or any WAC team besides BYU, won't win the national championship as long as the BCS is the determining system in colBut So, in lege football Playing in the WAC, and even when the Utes move to the Mountain West Baseball Utah took advantage of the early signing period and added a pair of local hurlers to it's pitch0 seaing staff for the son. The Utes acquired Jason Wiley from Bingham High School and Jeremy Webster, a lefty from Dixie College. Both are orgininally from South Jordan, Utah. Utah lost several key members of its pitching staff last season, including Rick Clagget, who left as one of the best pitchers in recent memory at Utah. right-hand- -y er Mens' Tennis Tyler Poulson, a senior at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake, will begin his career as a Ute in the Fall of 1999. Current Utah swimmer Aaron Norton will be joined by his sister Sarah, a high school senior in Tigard, Oregon. She was the Wyoming state champion in the 50 and 100 free when she attended Evanston High School in 1997. Also joining the Utes will be Brighton High School (Utah) star David Fleich. Fleich is the reigning state champion in the 200 IM. Finally, the Utes will add Michael Lemons to the team. Lemons is from Reno, Nev., and is a Junior National competitor in the butterfly and the IM. Utah will next compete this season on Jan. 2 when the men's and women's swimming and diving teams travel to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico. 1999-200- of the pistol team have guns, and they know how to use them. would begin. Division-IAwith its playoff system. The players don't complain of being tired and injuries aren't a greater risk. It would be perfect. Players would not miss any extra more school than do the players who compete in the NCAA Tournament for basketball or volleyball. In fact, since most of the games would take place during winter break, players would miss less. In the end, fans would be able to celebrate a true champion that was not decided by the polls. Sure, many great teams would be left out, but that happens every year in college basketball. You have to win to be in. What a concept. Just think how exciting the BYU-A- ir Force game would be this weekend. Both teams have already locked up bowl berths, so the game is really meaningless as far as postseason ramifications are concerned. Under my proposed system, the winner would have an opportunity to play for the national championship. The loser goes home. 0. And somehow that's Kansas State's problem now. The only chance Kansas State had this season was to run up the score on its softer opponents. And the Wildcats did just that. Kansas State 66, Indiana State o. Kansas State 73, Northern Illinois 7. Even still, the Cougars likely won't win the title ever again. To put it in bold terms, BYU would have never won the national championship in 1984 under the current system. The Cougars' strength of schedule was not that tough that season because they played in the WAC. Just look at Tulane this season. Tulane is undefeated but is only ranked tenth in the BCS. I know that Tulane didn't have the toughest schedule in the world, but the team still went undefeated and that's tough to do with any schedule. Tulane should be rewarded with a bowl game better than the Liberty Bowl against BYU. I enjoy the bowl system quite a bit, but I think a playoff system would be much better. My take on things is to take the champion from each Division-- I conference, which would be 10 teams. Then, let a committee pick six teams. That same committee would then seed the teams and a tournament ge ire mm III The DailvUtah Chronicle Your source for... How long can you beat the otitis ? UTAH VS.
