Show Friday, 5. June 1998 The Daily Utah Chronicle Letters to the Editor During winter quarter, I checked out three books and returned them at quarter's end. After several weeks, I received some notices that one of my books was missing. I called to make the correction and was told that I was still responsible for the book. Then I received a notice that a hold had been placed on my records. Well into spring quarter and 19 Summer Offering! Don't Trust Marriott Library Dear Editor, Hopefully I will be escaping the cold grasp of the University of Utah bureaucracy on June 12. You might say this letter is my final backlash at the system before graduating. -- nearing graduation, you can imagine my frustration! I immediately called the library. They said that they would put a "search" on the book. The letter sent said I owed nearly $50 for this book! was really upset I Finally, about this. the man over at circu- I called lation and told him my story. He said someone would get back with me (they never did). I called him back and he said they had found they actually got off their duffs and looked on some shelves. So, my point is that I almost didn't graduate, or would've had to pay for a $50 book I returned and the library lost! As students, we pay for the library's mistakes and accusations. I know I'm not the first person to whom this has happened. Don't trust the Marriott Library. Communication Didn't You Learn to Be Tolerant Dear Editor, I am writing in response to Michelle J. Cairo's request to have Gordon B. Hinckley booted from the list of speakers at the commencement exercises. I found it very interesting that she would relate the thoughts of other students who are planning on boycotting the commencement because of the speaker. Come on folks, this isn't the end of the world. Gordon B. Hinckley is a wonderful man. He, too, graduated from the University of Utah. He is a Mormon, but so what? So are at least 50 percent of the people you are graduating with. Heck, you may even have to sit next to one. I am disappointed that after four or five years at a university, some people - and I hope it's the have not learned to minority - be more Perhaps it open-minde- is better if they not graduate at all, but hang around for a couple of more years until they can learn to be accepting of others. I thought this was one of the first lessons we all learned in kindergarten. I don't believe there would be a Mormon student who would refuse to attend commencement exercises on the basis that one of the speakers might be the Pope, a rabbi, or the world leader of pagans. Beyond the fact that Gordon Hinckley is the president of the LDS Church, he is a person, a human being, and an outstand ing member of our community. He has been invited as an alumni, to speak to the graduating class. You may not revere him as but I believe after prophet, your you hear him speak, you will respect him at least as an honest and impressive human being. It is impossible to find a speaker who represents all the student body, as Cairo suggests, outside the factor of humanity. If you go ahead with your boycott as planned, I wish you well. Isn't it about time to show that we can respect other human beings and act like adults? See you at graduation. B. Ben Behunin Senior tart Soonor That's right.
