C&romc&Lottors UWtaLvJ Homosexuals can be cured LI I agree with Stuart McDonald's letter (During November Election, Mormons la Idaho Take A Ibsitrve Step Towards Jan. 5, 1995) that, generally, Gay society as a whole needs increased sensitivity to issues of homosexuality. I disagree howevo; with his daim that it is ' literally impossible for any homosexual fo make a shift to heterosexuality. There b much evidence to contradict this. : . W. Anna Freud (1949, 1952) writes that many cases show "good results" with four cases that led to heterosexual adjustment. L. Ovesey (1969) reports dure cases to be successful after a niinimum M.F. Schwartz and W.H. Masters (1984) report encouraging results with only a 28.4 percent failure rate after 5 years. L Bieber (1962) claims cure rate for his patients. G. Van den Aardway (1986) divided 101 homosexual clients into four categories: Radical Change, Satisfactory Change, Improved, and No Change. Among those that continued treatment for more than several months, 65 percent achieved results in the Radical or Satisfactory Change categories. E.M. and MX. Patrison (1980) report eleven men who overcame homosexuality through spiritually based conversion. What should one extrapolate from aD of these facts? Certainly changing from homosexuality to hcterosexuality is improbable and extremely difficult; but it is not impossible. What should never be extrapolated is the thing that is consistently held by people who ding fiercely to McDonald's claim. It is that homosexuals seeking change are being guided by nibrics, which should be condemned as such by the American Psychiatric and sub-ethic- al Psychological Associations.
