This is the part where we find out no one is who they seem in the sleepy town BY ANDREW WADE 6. of Red Rock. And the chase is on. Score cards should be passed out to keep track of each plot twist and hairpin turn. Written by brothers John and Rick Dahl, this dark ride holds together until the very end. Directed by John Dahl, whose previous film Kill Me Again was another taut noir celluloid adventure, fled floclc West is a solid, well-bui- lt excursion into the lives of these desperate characters. Red Rock West Propaganda Films Directed by John Dahl Produced by Sigurjon Sighvatsson, Steve Golin Written by John Dahl, Rich Dahl Starring Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Lara Flynn Boyle Whenever other critics start to call a film the "sleeper of 1994," one starts to worry. In the case of fled Rock West, this fear is warranted. One begins to worry when there are allusions to the Coen brothers' Blood Simple. Between Blood Simple and fled Rock West, a new could be formed: the noir western. Set in Wyoming, fled Rock West relates the story of Michael Williams (Nicolas Cage), a man intent on obtaing job. But his bum knee prevents ing a him from working on a rig so he drifts into the town of Red Rock where he hopes to find employment His first mistake is swaggering into the town bar. His second is taking the $5,000 down payment offered by the owner, The characters are made vivid by the talents of Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Lara Flynn Boyle and especially J.T. Walsh. The rest of the cast have proven track records in roles of this sort: Cage's dark and brooding protagonist, Hopper's wild-eyegun waving psychopath and Boyle's beautiful femme fatale are staples of their careers. Walsh, whose credits lean toward the bad guys side, is the stand out performance here. Although he has created a rogues gallery of nasty guys, his Wayne Brown is the best kind of villain the one you just love to hate. fled floclc West, while comparable to Blood Simple, lacks the visual style of the work of the Coen brothers. Come to think of it, that actually benefits this film, since d, sub-gen- re well-payin- oil-fie- ld Wayne Brown (J.T. Walsh), to kill off his wife. It seems Wayne has mistaken Michael for Lyle (Dennis Hopper), the Texas hit man originally hired to do the job. With money in hand, Michael makes his third mistake and decides to warn the bar owner's wife, Suzanne (Lara Flynn Boyle).
