Bowe loses title to Holyfield in 12 BY TIM KAWAKAMI Los Angeles Times LAS VEGAS The sky didn't fall on Riddick Bowe, but it was close. Befitting a sport that often verges toward the insane, the heavyweight title changed hands Saturday night, but the most memorable instant came from a wild prank dropped from above. In a tight majority decision, Evander Holyfield stunningly reclaimed the title he lost a year ago. Holyfield beat the bigger, younger Bowe with crackling right and left hooks and subtle movement away from Bowe's significant blows. But the picture-perfeperformance was delayed and in many ways upstaged by a prank stunt that delayed the seventh round identifor 21 minutes. A fied as James Miller from Las Vegas, circled the Caesars Palace outdoor pavilion, then sailed his parachute ct sky-divi- sky-dive- r, directly into the ring ropes near Bowe's corner. "It was a major league unfortunate incident," said Bowe's manager, Rock Newman. Bowe's pregnant wife, Judith, who was sitting near where the parachutist crashed back into the crowd, fainted and was taken to Sunrise Hospital for observation. The parachutist was taken to University Medical Center for unspecified injuries, and a nurse there said he was in stable condition. "I saw that parachute guy coming in, I didn't know what was ing and I was trying to get away," Holyfield said of the incident. "I did think about that tennis lady (Monica Seles) being stabbed I didn't know who was he coming after, me or Bowe? And I didn't want to get hit, either." Said a Caesars official: "I'm sure there's a law against flying into a boxing ring with a parachute." During the delay, both fighters prowled the ring and tried to keep warm in the chilly night breeze. Bowe wrapped himself in towels and Holyfield mostly stared out into the area of the crash, shaking his head back and forth. But they resumed the seventh round in the same rhythm they had all fight long with Bowe on the attack but Holyfield answering with punishing shots to Bowe's head. Holyfield lost a unanimous decision to Bowe a year ago when he stood in front of Bowe and slugged away. This time, he used more movement mixed in with his standard inside brawling. Needing a knockout, Bowe was all over Holyfield in the last two rounds, landing a series of hard punches, but he never came close to putting Holyfield down and seemed to know he had lost the fight when the bell rang. "I told everybody I was coming back because God was giving me the opportunity," said Holyfield, who became the third man to win back the heavyweight title, after Floyd Patterson and Muhammad Ali. "I promised them I would win this fight. And I know it seemed strange to people. "But after watching the first fight, I knew I couldn't go for 12 rounds. I knew if I did the same thing I would be beaten again." Bowe came out aggressively early, but seemed to tire by the third round, toe-to-t- oe when Holyfield began to pile up points with hard shots to Bowe's head. By the fourth, Bowe had a cut over his nose and looked noticeably slower. Bowe was staggered in the fourth round with a Holyfield right. In the seventh, Bowe was rallying before the parachute delay, but could not maintain the momentum. One judge ruled the fight a draw, but two other gave Holyfield 3 4 the fight by marand gins. "I thought it was a very close fight, and I thought it could've been given to him," Newman said. "But there is no quarrel with the decision." 114-11- 4, 115-11- Chronicle Assistant Sports Editor Miami. In fact,, every where" I turned last week it seemed that there was something noteworthy going on. College Football: When unranked Louisiana State upset the Crimson Tide last Saturday, the college football race all of a sudden got a lot more interesting. Even though Notre Dame and Florida State will play for the No 1. ranking November 13, the winner is by no means guaranteed the best shot at the national championship. If Florida State wins, chances are no one will catch them, but if Notre Dame wins, and I have a feeling they will, things 56 Fumbles-lo- st Senior wide receiver Greg Hooks is this week's Lumpy's Player of the week. The possibilities for the bowls are endless but a Notre Dame win over Florida State will result in one thing: a more cloudy picture of a college football championship. Basketball Anyone?: Time is wearing short for the Ute football team. They must win their next two games against Air Force and BYU to have any shot at a bowl. If they don't, I think I'll transfer to the school of higher elevation. Luckily for Utah, Air Force is ineffective offensively; and the only other defense in the conference that is more banged up than theirs is BYU's. The Cougars, as of early last week had a large number of their linebackers and running backs injured. Utah, as we all know, has its entire secondary hurt. The result? Utah will do a lot of running and BYU will do a lot of passing against each other. The game will be the best opportunity the Utes have since 1988 to beat BYU, and to do it front of 65,000 Cougars fans would be icing on the cake for Ron McBride's crew. With a win over the Cougars, Ute quarterback Mike McCoy may finally be able to get some rest from fans unsatisfied with Utah's occasional inability to score inside the d line this season. Let's face it, the guy has proved himself over and over. The past three games he has had career-recor- d performances, he is 13th in the nation in total offense and is leading a team that is scoring almost 30 points a game. As much as it hurts you fans, if you score 30 points a game and lose, you don't have a quarterback problem, you have a defense problem. A horse is a horse: Unless you bet on Arcangues, the 133-- 1 long shot that shocked the world and a few bookies by winning the Breeders Cup last Saturday. The old Arcangues, whose name his jockey could not even pronounce prior to the race had only earned $298,520 in his career before picking up the $1,560,000 winners share. Not as as he thought: In a fight that had all the theatrics of a soap opera, Evander Holyfield became only the third fighter, in boxing history to regain the title from the - 20-yar- Bowe-dacio- us man he lost it to when he defeated Riddick Bowe by' unanimous decision. . The only knockdown of the fight came when Holyfield's trainer wrestled him to the floor after the two kept swinging at the end of the 12th and final round. Just for a moment I thought I heard one of them shout "Let's , finish this outside." The only thing more shocking to fans than Holyfield's win, d and his temper, was the fact that Bowe physically went 12 rounds. Prior to the Fight, the former champ had been criticized as going on the Buster Douglas "see" food diet. see "Woodland" on page nine final-roun- |
