In one week the student body was able to raise over $1,000. For every $500 they raise they are able to adopt another family. It is unusual for a high school group to do more than one family for Christmas. This is a project where you need to keep focus," said Vicki superArmstrong, visor. To keep up the energy and be organized and take care of these families takes strong lead Sub-for-San- ta Santa comes to town Cathy Allred City Editor Lehi High School took first place in the district academic decathlon competition last week beating out American Fork High School's team. The victory comes in the wake of a report showing lower SAT and ACT results for the school compared to the opposition. The champions will compete at the state level in March. First overall in the interview and essay category was Tonya Loveridge. Jack Vincent came in third overall in the interview category and second overall in the social science category. Levi Jones finished first overall in economics and finished third overall in social science. Collin Baker placed third overall in speeches and took second overall in the interview and also in the economics category. Jake Ellis placed third overall in social science and Dustin Jacobson took first overall in economics with a second place overall in social science. Competing in the 1500 and less category based on the population of the high school, the students began with a disadvantage. "Probably one reason why we are so proud of them is that we were ill prepared because of the switch in coaching and we had a late start said their coach Team captain: Lena Nance Honors category: Levi Jones, Jack Vincent, Brock Worthen Scholastic category: Collin Baker, Jake Ellis, Eric Wilbur Varsity category: Dustin Jacobson, Tonya Loveridge, Courtney Neal Stacy Howell. "I'm excited to see what they can do when they are prepared. We have a really good group of kids." Elaine Tucker selected the youth for the team and ordered the necessary supplies. She had been the decathlon coach for 11 years, but has also become the literacy program representative and is the senior project representative as well. "Elaine Tucker deserves all the credit, her and the kids," said Howell. "She was the previous coach, she picked the team and they are a good bunch of kids." The youth comment that even though they spent the least amount of time preparing for the competition, they were the most relaxed at the event. "I think it's great," said Collin Baker. "We didn't take it too seriously and we had fun." 7 Page Evidently, more people were naughty than nice in Lehi last Saturday when Santa CI a us came to town. Only about 50 children greeted him at the city hall on 153 N. 100 East The Lehi City Power superintendent took Polaroid pictures of the children as they snuggled up to Father Christmas and told him their Christmas wishes. Dennis Ashton took a little over 50 photos. One young boy wanted a new fire truck just like the one Santa had. Another young lad just wanted to give Santa Claus a hug. One more who enjoys Halloween monsters was frightened by the huge red costumed elf Did Santa get his Christmas wish and get to blow the new fire truck's siren? "No, they wouldn't let me do that but they did it enough let me tell you," said Santa Claus. Lehi City employees Connie Ashton and Jan Jonsson were responsible for organizing this year's visit. Shelly Ewell of Lehi who has been known to work as a liaison for Santa Claus was his representative this year. Peer leadership is selling Santagrams which cost $1. The buyer gets to send a message and candy cane via Santagram. Santa Claus will also be visiting the school for photos selling for $2 to raise more funds. "A buck for a buck" sells a card with a reindeer for $1 that is posted with the buyer's name on the cafeteria window. Why are the students going to all this effort? "I think it's fun said Amanda Romley. "And because I know what it's like to get gifts for Christmas." Stacy "Sha Sha" Johnson agrees and adds, "So you can feel the real spirit of giving at Christmas." A thermometer marks the amount that they have been able to raise.
