For the third year, residents of Highland, Cedar Hills, American Fork, Lehi and other surrounding communities are also invited to participate. The purpose of the tradition is to promote community spirit and unity. Joni Nielson of Alpine, who has been involved with the project for many years now, reported that they sold 33,000 candles last season and are planning for more this year. The city is doing through Dec. 15; the kits that include 32 candles, 32 sacks, sand, and instructions will cover the average frontage area and cost $12 each. People can pick up their kits from the Alpine City Shops (181 E. 200 North behind Peppermint Place) Dec. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon and Dec. 21 through 23 from 4 to 7 p.m.. Each buyer will need to bring a five gallon container per kit to hold the sand. "Our goal is to start focusing on community wide projects that will benefit the entire community," said the store manager John Haws. "This project will provide money for library books and everyone benefits Customers will be asked at the checkout stand if they would like to donate a dollar or more to their local library. They will be able to decide whether that will be the Lehi, Eagle Mtn., Cedar Fort, or Saratoga Springs library fund. Donors who donate a dollar will be able to have their names written on a Christmas cutout to hang at the front of the store. Kohlers was able to raise $100 the first day of the drive. Their goal, with the help of the community, is to make and give away 99 quilts to organizations in need.
