Show sufferers fear loss of bus service MS to physical therapy treatments Harudw Clark By New Utah! - Wednesday. November 17, program, not the transportation." The people who ride the bus The proposed cancellation of transportation service for some Utah County residents with dis abilities may make it impossible for those residents to attend physical therapy sessions for their disabilities. "I hope they don t take the bus from us. That's the only time I get out," says Lehi resident Carma Beck, who goes to physical thera py Tuesday mornings at the Orem Sports Medicine Center. National The Multiple Sclerosis Society (MNSS) Utah Chapter, pays for the therapy, and for 15 years has been paying for the United Way bus that picks up over half the people at the therapy session. But a recent decision by NMSS a dozen people, leave nearly may including Carma Beck, without a way to get there. Not everyone rides the bus every week, says Eileen Glathar, who, with her husband Ralph recently resigned as of NMSS's Utah County Support Group, but over a year 10 or 12 people depend on that are afraid that if they can't get to it the physical therapy program will be discontinued, Glathar says, reading a sentence in an Oct 28, 1999 letter from Featherstone and Ruth Baxter, the program's director. "Please rest assured that physical therain the py will continue OremProvo area as long as there is adequate participation." Glathar has read the letter to several local politicians who have all pointed out that the phrase "adequate participation" is language people use to leave open the possibility of canceling a program. "Our intent as a chapter is to provide programs across the state of Utah, and not ever to cancel programs," says Featherstone. She adds, "We never want to set up a program and cancel it. That's never our intent. We realize how important these programs are to people." Glathar wonders how people will get to the programs if they can't afford to hire an aide, or don't have a friend or child who can spend three or four hours every Tuesday accompanying them to therapy. Carma Beck, for example, cannot get out her front door without an aide. "I can open it a little bit, but when I go to open the screen, the screen catches me in it." She adds that she tried to open the screen door, a storm door, "one day and I got caught in it and I was there for hours, and a kid came down the street and I asked him to help me and he did. It was a high school kid. They come down the street a lot." Beck has a similar problem getting back into the house. The storm door opens out towards her and she can't get around it. But she worries about something else as well. She's classified as Homebound status means cost-cutti- bus. "Seven of the 12 people at physical therapy today came on the bus," Glathar said in a Nov. 2 interview. However, according to Tami Featherstone, Chapter President of NMSS, "Transportation is not service we offer. "For 15 years some of these people have relied on that transportation and considered it part of the program," Eileen Glathar responds. Glathar says that most oi me people on uie uus wuuiun i be able to get to physical therapy without both the bus and the aide who rides the bus. But to NMSS, both the aide and the bus are liabilities. a "If anything happened to the aide or to anyone helping the aide MS would be liable, says Featherstone, adding, "we provide the physical therapy as a home-boun- d. -"-"m.- i HQ. aw, - 1 J A 1 V V.r A " t i i 756-766- You'll open the throttle ' THIS WINTER LONG BEFORE - I I If I YOU EVER OPEN YOUR WALLET. w. "I really am homebound, I guess, because I have to have someone to put me in bed and get me out." But that status also means she can't leave home. She emphasizes two things, "The transportation is not our program, but the physical therapy will continue." Beck, Glathar and the others who ride the bus hope it will continue, but are not convinced their NMSS understands transportation needs. Any of the alternatives will be different enough that several of the riders may not be able to get to therapy. Beck feels abandoned. "I hope somebody hears our cries.
