Show Free Press New Utah! - Wednesday, November 1 7. 1999 Cedar Fort Veterans Day Ceremony shows gratitude Lehi Charlynn Anderson Cedar Fort Correspondent Cedar Fort residents along with veterans, families and friends gathered at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month on Veterans Day to dedicate the new Veterans Memorial at the Cedar Fort Cemetery. Colonel Mike Johnson of the 97th Troop Command, Utah National Guard, spoke about the incalculable debt each American owes to the men and women who have fought to preserve our freedom. He said that these veterans had given their all whether they died in the conflict or returned to build a stronger nation. Col. Johnson pointed out, "You have chosen to gather on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour in 1999, the last year of this century. I dont know if this has any special significance, but it seems to emphasize the fact that it is never too late to show our gratitude." Colonel Johnson also offered the dedicatory prayer. Cedar Valley Elementary students from the third, fourth, and fifth grades enthusiastically waved flags and sang "God Bless the U.S A" and "America the Beautiful" under the direction of Sue Jeffery. Members of the Utah National Guard performed the flag detail and gun salute duties, adding to the solemn dignity of the occasion. d The striking Veterans Memorial has a beautiful metal flag and eagle on top, and a front plaque containing the name, branch of service, and war of each veteran buried in Cedar Fort Cemetery. The plaque honors 19 veterans who served in k wars ranging all the way from the Indian War to the Persian Gulf Buy By brick-base- Walker-Blackhaw- COUPON ef (must be of equal or lesser value) with this coupon. Each year schools are judged anew for their efforts in promoting patriotism among their students. At Sego Lily, respect for this nation and stress on being productive citizens is a constant endeavor of teachers and school personnel. "I am pleased for the efforts of our teachers in helping our children love America," Martin said when he announced the honor during Thursday's Veteran's Day program, where nearly thirty veterans and accompanying family members were honored. The program included patriotic essays by students Rachel Perry, Mikelle Despain, and Brian Lew followed by sixth grade teacher Rex Amendola's personal account of service in the Marine Corps, and challenge to the students to live in such a way that the Constitution can be kept alive for America.
