Show New Utah! - Wednesday, September 15, 1999 Week set aside Local stores recognized for not selling tobacco to minors to promote prostate cancer awareness The last week of September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness of prostate cancer and educate men on the importance of early detection. Nine out of 10 men can be successfully treated with early detection. The American Cancer Society recommends that men over 50 should discuss the need for regular prostate-specifi- c antigen (PSA) testing and digital rectal exams with their health care providers. Men in high risk groups those who have a family history of prostate cancer and African American men are recommended to consider testing before they reach age 50. A higher than normal PSA level does not necessarily indicate cancer, but the physician should order additional tests. The Man to Man program offered by the American Cancer Society helps prostate cancer patients and their families cope with the disease. The group meets every third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Utah Valley Family Practice Cent er (old Granite Furniture building, 500 W. 1134 North, Provo). For more information, call North Utah County retailers recently earned good marks for not selling tobacco to minors. Because of the highly addictive nature of nicotine and the fact that 90 percent of tobacco users began by the age of 19, early intervention programs are critical to prevent youth addiction. "Tobacco The Underage Buying Operation" to monitor compliance with state and federal tobacco laws is now in its third year of implementation.
