He'd traveled all the way from Miami to his temporary home in Salt Lake City. As members of the press gathered around hoping for a good photo opportunity, Jack merely flicked his bright yellow forked tongue at the visitors and declined to make any com- i-- - - .v-i- A . f . . vXr?"- -? Jack is a Komodo dragon, also known as a Monitor Lizard. One of the largest living reptiles, Komodo dragons have existed since the Jurassic pericousins od, to dinosaurs , v4 behind 29 hatchlings, the largest hatching of Komodo dragons outside of Indonesia. Komodo dragons are on the endangered species list. There are only between 2,500 and 5,000 left on the planet. Jack is proud to be the father of such a large number of offspring. Jack is being housed in tropical comfort at Hogle Zoo, in a w$ S;f: Jack, the Komodo Dragon, on loan to Hogle Zoo for the summer, entertains a tyke with his antics. and lush plants. He will be kept behind a glass wall because, although he appears to be docile, he is a determined hunter who can take down prey as large as a water buffalo. His saliva is toxic. It contains greenhouse with a waterfall 40 different types of bacteria, four of these having no known antidote.
