Show Softball team tops Utes Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent The battery of Kim Allan and Stacey Johnson powered the Lehi Pioneers to a 1 win over the Uintah Utes in Region 10 softball April 6.. Lehi Coach Lynn Allan said, "Kim pitched very well. She struck out eight batters and allowed only three hits." While pitcher Allan kept By 9-- Uintah scoreless during the first six innings, catcher Johnson racked up four RBI for the afternoon. In going 3 for 4 at the plate, Johnson hit a single, a double, and a homer. "We had some great defensive plays," Coach Allan said. "Callie Gillman made four great plays at third. Primarily producing rainbow trout, they cover waters from Tropic extending Reservoir, near Cedar City to Locomotive Springs in Box Elder County. He explained, make somewhere around "We different stocking trips each year, with most of our trips done during the summer." He continued, "We raise 600 catchable sized rainbows, fish large enough for people to catch and keep, if they choose. Our annual production is some170,000-180,00- 0 between and of fish pounds average costpound of fish is including where $1.80-$1.90poun- d, all costs of personnel, trucks, feed, etc." Since Doug's arrival, several changes have resulted in doubling facility production. Water has been routed to double water flows through the hatchery system and oxygen is injected into the water to help fish grow faster and stay healthier. Other additions include a new fish loader, made possible through donated funds from the Salt Lake County Fish and Game Association and matching funds from the Division. Robinson "180,000 noted, pounds of fish loaded by hand can become quite a labor intensive project. This new fish loader, reduces the stress on the fish and allows fish to be planted in much better condition." Due to these changes and others, this hatchery is more efficient than any other hatchery in the state. Fish stocked are currently cost-wis- e, per-poun- d, J I CALL US FOR ANY ELECTRICAL NEED! Tnii 0 inches long and 13 pound each, although later in the season, they are expected to be inches long. Robinson reports, "Even though they are a little small, they still provide good fishing." Fishing quality in the second driest state is a direct result of the hatchery program. Doug explained, "The fish hatcheries play a major role in Utah fishing, especially trout fishing. Without them, there would be very little trout fishing in the state, due to little natural reproduction in the waters, stocked by hatchery fish." Fishing is a popular sport in Utah, with trout playing a significant role in this interest. Record numbers of people are now fishing Utah's waters, due to excellent fishing opportunities on some of the larger reservoirs, including Strawberry and Jordanelle. This facility is currently running at maximum capacity, with 90,000 pounds of fish, Each waiting to be stocked. fall, 70,000 1 inch fish are planted in Deer Creek, increasing trout survival from the hungry walleye, also found in that reservoir. High snowpack will likely delay planting in elevation lakes, higher streams, and reservoirs until Jamie Elmer stays with a Provo runner during the mile trials April 5 at the Utah County Invitational. The track team will compete at Park City next Wednesday. to several new changes, most bear hunters will not have to travel to pick up a 1999 Utah black bear hunting application this year. Wildlife Judi Tutorow, for the Coordinator Licensing Division of Wildlife Resources, reports that most hunters who have applied for a Utah black bear permit since 1993 should receive a preprinted hunting permit application in the mail by April 12. Each preprinted application includes that hunter's bonus point information and may only be used by them. Tutorow reminds applicants, "Hunters may not make photocopies of their application for other hunters to use." Those with questions about the bonus point status listed on their application should contact Hunt Application Office, the private contractor handling the 1999 Utah Black Bear Draw. Hunters may call from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. The contractor has the Division bonus point status files and should be able to answer hunter's questions. Hunters must still purchase a 1999 Utah small game or combination license to apply this year, or must include funds so one may be purchased for them if they draw a permit. Although House Bill 196 did away with the need to have a small game license to hunt bears in Utah, this legislative bill doesn't become law until July 1. Beginning in 2000, those applying for a black bear hunting permit will not be required to purchase a small game or combination license. must Hunters specify whether they want a limited entry bear permit, or a limited entry bear archery permit, by checking the correct box on their application. Applications will be rejected if a box isn't checked. Sportsmen are also reminded that all hunt numbers have changed from last year and are no longer included on the application. The new three digit, blue hunt numbers mav be Thanks June. "This is a real satisfying job," revealed Robinson. "I take a lot of pride in being able to raise fish good sized, disease-fre- e that people can go out and catch. I don't think there is anything more satisfying than seeing that success to the end. This is something I have been enjoying for more than 25 years and I will likely miss that w hen it comes time to retire." Visitors are welcome to visit the hatchery, with visiting hours open from 8 p.m., 7 days a week. Tours may be scheduled in advance, to learn more about the hatchery program. Visitors are reminded to avoid throwing rocks, pennies, and dirt into the raceways, which can result in killing fish. Robinson concluded, "A lot of times, visitors, like to watch the fish feed. If we are feeding the fish when you are here, you may ask for a handful of feed and we will let you feed some on your own. Fish really get into a feeding frenzy when it is eating time." 0 Three Bars Saddlery from San Antonio, Texas found in the 1999 Utah Black Bear Proclamation, which will be available by April 12. Unless applicants plan to hunt only bears in 1999, they're encouraged to purchase their Wildlife Habitat yearly Authorization before applying. Those who do not have a 1999 Habitat Authorization before applying must include funds with their application fee so one may be purchased for them, should they obtain a permit. If these applicants buy a fishing license (which also requires purchase of a Habitat Authorization) before draw results are available, and then obtain a black bear permit, they'll end up with two Habitat Authorizations and they may not receive a refund for their second Habitat Authorization.
