Taylor's mission in 1858 with the news that the US Army was on the march to Utah and that all the foreign missionaries were to return home. On February 19, Brother Taylor and 64 other saints mostly returning missionaries sailed form Liverpool, England for home. The company he traveled with went to Florence by train where they were outfitted and after a short wait proceeded on their journey to the Salt Lake Valley. As our group approached Fort Kerney we were told that the soldiers were waiting for us with cannons placed in the road to stop our wagon train. When we were within 15 miles of the Fort the company halted for half a day and wasted a lot of ammunition shooting at the trees. At sundown the train got everything in readiness and prepared to make a dash and passed the Fort during night. The captain warned us to travel close together and not make any noise, while he went on ahead to find a suitable camp ground.
