Father was busy when she asked for work and he told her rather abruptly, that they did not deed help. He had dismissed her without even looking up from what he was doing. Mother was practically broke and quite discouraged as she had hunted for work for several days. She sighed and started walking away when something caused father to look up and see her for the first time. sprinkling, she wanted to know his religious affiliation and about his family. When he told her his family were Mormons, mother was fit to be tied. Mother had been raised in Missouri where the Mormons were driven out and she had a very dim view of the Mormon people and their religion. She actually believed that Mormons grew horns and that the men hitched their polyga-miwives to a plow to cultivate their fields and that the missionaries sole purpose in the Albany That's when it happened, father saw the only woman he ever loved and was completely hooked. "Wait a minute", he said, "we will find a job for you," and put her to work in the kitchen peel- ing and preparing vegetables. Denver was a tough town in those days, full of drifters and tough characters and human life was very cheap. There were killings and gun fights nearly every day. During their conversation one day, mother told father about her little girl and mother and where they lived on the outskirts of town. Father had an ally in grandma Schiller and also in our sister Maybell, who, although she was small, loved father from the first, as he was very thoughtful of them. Mother finally consented to their marriage in order to have protection for her mother and daughter and a sense of security for herself. They were married in Trinidad, Colorado on the 12th day of April 1885 and father was a happy as it was possible for a little homely Danish-mato be. He got the woman he wanted and a family of his own. Father always said that grandma was the best investment he ever made. Father had never discussed his family or his religious connections with mother. They attended church when it was handy, regardless of the denomination as they were all Christians. One Sunday in church the minister was telling the story of the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. The preacher said, "and he took Jesus down by the river and slowly poured water over his head." Father rose up from his seat and exclaimed, "what a damn lie!" The people all around him started, father gathered his brood and hastily left the church. When they got home mother was very embarrassed and wanted to know why father would do such a thing. When he explained to her that baptism meant immersion and not st See NIELSEN on ARE YOU HAVING A BAD AIR DAY?
