Show Lehi Free Press New Utah! - Wednesday, November 4, 1998 Sports tough contest against Pioneers end season with By TRACY WILSON Sports Correspondent Call it a game of big plays or a game of missed opportunities, but either way it was a win for Dixie and a loss for Lehi, and that spells the end of Lehi High School's football season for 1998. In the first round of the Utah State high school playoffs last Saturday, the Flyers defeated the Pioneers 14-- on a brisk afternoon at Pioneer Field in Coach Steve Clement's first year in the varsity coaching ranks. The Pioneers completely outclassed the visiting Flyers in the first half; although Dixie was favored by most prognosti-catorLehi ran up 76 yards on the ground and added 71 more through the air to 32 Dixie 8 s. ground yards and 37 aerial yards. Both sides of Lehi's line showed up for this first half. Lehi drew first blood at 10:51 of the second quarter after Pioneer punter Jeremy Brown buried the fourth-dowkick out of bounds at the Flyer line. From there it was all Kolby Fisher and Clint McKell who knocked Dixie quarterback Lance Pendleton n Dixie, - Page 1 1 loss 14-- 8 backwards on consecutive sacks for minus-- 2 and a minus-- 5 for the safety in the Flyer end zone. Those two guys were in the Dixie backfield so much during the game, they should have had on blue. They constantly disrupted the Flyer offense with pressure and sacks. But it was Lehi's lack of execution when the offensive opportunities were there and a few officiating decisions that spelled defeat. The Pioneers drove to the Flyer 13 late in the first quarter, for example, but misfired on three consecutive plays and turned the ball over on downs. As the first half ended, the kD r& Pioneers were again knocking at the Flyer door from the 19 when a would-b- e touchdown pass was dropped in the end zone. A fumble at the Lehi 32 gave Dixie their first TD, and Dixie's only sustained drive, from the 50, gave them their second score. In both cases it was the big play that proved successful for the third-quart- Flyers. The m - ni er f pass from 34-ya- rd Pendleton to speedy Cody accounted for the first score with 40 seconds gone in the second half. A run by their fullback and a sprint by Pendleton set up the Pendleton to Josh Adams aerial that sealed Lehi's fate at 7:35 of the third period. Lehi's defense began to falter in the second half as Dixie had six plays of 12 yards or more. The Flyers also had two scores called back because of a clipping and a holding penalty. With runner Justin Libber-toin the ball game, Lehi amassed 76 yards as he accounted for 46 yards in the first half, but a cramp sidelined the Lehi MVP. Coby Wilson added 18 and sophomore quarterback Cade Cooper contributed 12. In the second half it was all the Flyers as Libberton was out after two plays and returned for only two more in the fourth Quarter.
