Candidates were interviewed last fall, but there were some timing issues that needed to be worked through before a final selection could be made. "I am delighted that Chris Coons will be returning to Utah County. He was an assistant administrator here for a number of years before taking his current in Salt Lake," assignment Dursteler said. "Chris is a leader with a lot of energy, a passion for quality, and genuine concern for those with whom he works. "In my new regional role, I am needing to spend a lot of my time in Salt Lake, working with staff at the central office, coordinating efforts with the other regions. IHC executives, the governing boards, and members of our local Leadership Council have all suggested that we needed this addi tional leader here. We had hoped to fill this slot some months ago, but a variety of timing issues caused us to hold until now," Dursteler said. Coons will be officed in the administrative area of UVRMC. Dursteler will temporarily relocate his office to a vacant office in Physicians' Plaza until new regional offices are completed in the Northwest (Granite) building on the UVRMC campus. In his new role, Coons will work with the UVRMC and OCH medical staff and governing board. He will also chair the hospital Leadership Council and have county wide functional assignments yet to be determined. "This feels like coming home; I'm excited to return to Utah County. I look forward to getting reacquainted with the people and the issues of this region. The next few years are pivotal ones for the Urban South Region: and I'm excited to be a part of that," Coons said. The Utah County chapter of the American Red Cross needs volunteers able to leave on 14- - or y assignments to the scenes of national disasters. Disaster Action Team volunteers must be willing to travel on as short as one day's notice in the Red Cross' Emergency Response Vehicle. Currently, volunteers from Utah County are in Grand Forks, North Dakota assisting flood victims. "National disasters can be devastating, and it gives the victims hope when other people come help them," said Karen Campbell, emergency services director at the Red Cross. Campbell said assisting disaster victims may be the hardest, but most rewarding, work volun teers will ever do "I know if we had a national disaster in Utah, Red Cross volunteers from around the country would come here to help us," Campbell said. "What our slogan says is true, help can't wait."" Disaster Action Team volunteers may be asked to drive the Emergency Response Vehicle, serve food, distribute clean-u- p kits, and provide "stress counseling" to victims who need to express their emotions. Tom Miller of American Fork traveled with the Disaster Action Team to Florida in 1992 to help victims of Hurricane Andrew. Miller recalled being approached by a woman whose condominium had been destroyed. Embarrassed at having to receive assistance, the woman began to cry. "I asked her if she had ever helped anyone before, and she said " Then it's yes," Miller said. only coming back to you now,' I told her." The American Red Cross will pay all expenses of Disaster Action Team volunteers, who must be in good health.
