Show Free Press - Wednesday, February 26, 1997 - Page 9 Sports Pioneers enter state tourney underdog to Dixie, Richfield By TRACY WILSON The naysayers have Lehi High School basketball ranked third and fifth in the Utah State 3A final polls. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Southern Utah University Centrum in Cedar City will tell the tale of the year. Coach Dave Filimoehala has led his charges through a 15-- 5 season in which they have lost to three 4A schools, West, Springville and Pleasant' Grove, but they have beaten five others, Bear River (number one in Region 5), Box Elder, Payson, Tooele and Spanish Fork. On the strength of their schedule, Lehi still looks like the team to beat. They held the number one spot in state polls for four of the eleven weeks. Pine View started out on top for six weeks and Richfield has been there since Feb. 8. The Richfield Eagles, boasting a record have wins over 2A and 3A schools and a 9 loss to Union of Region 10, a team which 0 the Pioneers defeated and during the season. They beat 7 Park City by only 9 Saturday as they had 17 free throws in the final quarter on their home court. Even though the Purple and White-cla- d LHS quint has been playing below par, they are the best balanced team in 3A with no real stars, but someone has got to step up and take charge this weekend if they are to repeat as 3A state 19-- 2 58-4- 57-5- 81-7- 1 champions. Cedar City, the Pioneers' quarterfinal opponent Thursday at 10 a.m., has a 16-- 5 record with three losses in Region 9, to Dixie twice and to Hurricane, Their only venture outside of the small-schocompetition saw the Redmen lose to Timpview 47-3- 9 in early Andy Heaton, Ryan Gunn and Trent Pryor have been stars for the Red and Gold who edged and eliminated Uintah of Region 10, 41-3last Saturday at home. Rand Jaynes topped all Cedar scorers with 16. They hit seven fielders to slip by the Utes but don't expect them to be that open against the Pioneers. Although they posted an 3 season record, they had wins over tournament-boun- d Carbon, Wasatch and Emery. A 60-5- 6 win over the Wasps last d week set the tone for the playoff at Pine View, but Lehi didn't have the offensive punch against the Panthers to pull out the win. With Jana Fullmer, Callie Trane and Cally Gillman leading the way against the Wasps with 20, 15 and 10, respectively, the Lady Pioneers were able to hold guard Carrie Summerhays at 9; she averages 17. Tasha Widdison, Wasatch's other regular standout, led the attack with 14. At Pine View, Tawra Seegmiller gunned through 19 points, 13 in the final quarter, to lead the home team. Jolley chipped in 10 to help the Panther cause. Fullmer and Brittney Allred were held to 10 each, followed by Trane's 9, C. Gillman's 7 and Katye Gillman's 4. Only Allred, Fullmer, K. The Lehi quint averages four goals each game with Cooper, Jason and Childs Kelton Butterfield setting the pace. Cooper has 33 for 31 percent; Butterfield is 13 of 39 for 33 percent and Childs leads the team average with 18 of 48 for 38 percent. A smothering, trapping zone press on defense results in a lot of turnovers and points off turnovers for the Purple and White. Height may be a negative factor against the Pioneers, but they know how to go hard to the boards when they need to. Charges taken were tallied this year and Grant Ellsworth has been knocked down three times. Christofferson, Magnusson and Seth Sunderland have two each. Yates and Magnusson lead the rebounding statistics with 9.4 and 4.1 averages. Magnusson has 26 blocked shots on the season. Mike Christofferson averages 5.6 assists per game with a total of 118. Of the starters you want to see at the line, Christofferson averages 76 percent, but Butterfield and Childs lead the team from the charity stripe with 93 and 80 percent, 14 oz. box Tropicana Orange Juice TrorSiu1 2$J00 f if tjr V?; i - l -- K-.AJ- II Coca Cola 12 Pack I , $3 49 - Pringles Assorted ,s.a - ..
