Martial art form focuses on self-improveme- nt Harmony, not conflict is the key to success in aikido, a Japanese martial art form of Terry Gettling, owner and sensei (teacher) of Kansha Aikido in Provo, began his study of various martial arts 23 years ago. His training includes judo, Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai kickboxing. Currently he is undefeated as a kickboxer, holds a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a shodan in aikido. But since 1988, Gettling has devoted his study and training exclusively to aikido, which utilizes the philosophy of "trying to better yourself rather than defeat another. "Success in aikido doesn't depend just strength but in learning proper movement," he said. "You really want to build confidence in yourself, that way you can avoid confrontation." Classes at Kansha Aikido are geared to all ages and sizes of people, and make great family activities. Gettling starts with teaching strong balance and posture. Training with the swords can start as early as the sixth rank. A three-mont- h introductory class includes up to eight group classes per week, one private lesson with Gettling, and a practice on self-defens- uniform.
