John C. Burton, Principal at Manila Elementary, said elementary candidates who participate in the program take most of the required work offered by the BYU College of Education in two consecutive semesters (fall and winter). Originally, the purpose of the program was to assist students who had already obtained a college de en at Barratt or Manila Elementary schools and are taught by career, teachers at those two schools. The prospective teachers arrive at the public school at 8 a.m. each morning and leave at 5 p.m. This involves them totally in the local school setting during the school year. As a result they become an integral part of the faculty and participate in teachingexperiences both semesters of their training. According to Burton the program has several advantages: "First, prospective teachers get a realistic view of what real teaching is like. They find out it's hard work, but a fulfilling career for those who are dedicated and prepared. Second, com- - . for the week of Jan. The children also receive individual instruction from vocal coach, Marilyn Rudolph, a noted area soloist and vocal teacher.
