She had croup. "We stayed up all night and three or four times visited the bathroom filled with steamed up air to help her," recalled Nuttal, "If I had not known what was going on, it would have been very scary; even with knowing, it was still somewhat frightening." We are in the middle of croup season. "Right now there is a real mean croup," commented Margie Olsen of Lehi and nurse for Dr. Nuttal. "It's hit some of these little ones pretty hard and we've had more in structed breathing. The age affected and in the greatest danger is from six months to five years. The average length of croup is anywhere from 6 days, although I have seen it last a week in some children," adds Olsen. The first line of defense we recommend is a cool mist humidifier," pointed out Olsen. The humidifier 2-- the hospital this year than usual from it." Some parents find popsicles are effective, although there is a danger of them swallowing part of a popsicle and choking. The idea behind these methods is to reduce the swelling in the air passage. Parents can be alerted to danger in croup by the "strider," the squeaky sound that is emitted when a child attempts to breath in. If after followingsuggested treatments for 15 to 20 minutes, the strider does not subside, get the child to the hospital where they can give them breathing treatments. If at any time the child's face and lips become ashen gray, they need to receive immediate help and a rush to the hospital is not out of order. Sometimes a ride in the cool night air on the way to the hospital will reduce the swelling. 0 V U E Orem S.E. ol tcroitlrom I. E Unhwi Itv K s Mall Murdoch Travel Mora thin 500 stylas to ehooto from.
