It was a game with Lehi having several bad breaks. The first play of the game resulted touchdown by Lehi's in a Travis College which was called back. The next time that Lehi had the ball, a very questionable call that looked like a touchdown, but was ruled four inches short of the goal line and one inch short of a first down marker. This, along with the bad weather, made it difficult for Lehi to come back. However, this was a great season as the team ended with a record. They were 2 and 1 in preseason play against three powerhouse football schools. In the Lehi scored 78 points, giving up only 15. In division play, Lehi won the Division Championship with a perfect 0 record. Lehi was led by a strong throwing game with quarterback Tyson Washburn throwing to a number of good receivers. Tyson broke a league recordfor number of passingyards. They also had a number of great running backs with Kevin Jeffries, Travis College, Gary Moore and Bryce Cutler doing most of the ball carrying. To have a great offense, a team must have a great offensive line and a great defense, and this year's team had both. Coach Rik Nelson, who had just concluded his 18th year, would like to thank his assistant coaches, Shane Atkinson, James Munson, Jeff Swenson, Chad Smith, and Colby Holmes. Coach Nelson is also appreciative of his coaching staffs dedication, loyalty, knowledge of football, and the time and effort that they put toward this program. He would also like to thank the cheerleaders and the wonderful support of the players' parents. Lehi's boys' team placed first of the five region schools by posting a strong score of 22, with Wasatch a distant second at 62, followed by Uintah 67, Park City, 78 and Union. Individually, Scott Cummings ran beautifully. He allowed Jeremy Tolman of Uintah to determine the initial pace of the race and followed behind, gradually closing on Tolman and ultimately passing him midway through the race. Then Cummings pulled away and crossed the finish line 38 seconds ahead of second place Tolman and breaking the existing course record by 35 seconds. Adam Hughes took third place with 17:53, and Bryce Messersmith fourth at 17:58, showing excellent performances from both runners. James Giovannoni was sixth, 18:08; Ben Grimley, eighth, 18:20; and Aaron Woffinden in 10th at 18:21, with the best performance of his two years with Lehi. Blaine Wilkey was 14th, back after an extended injury. Troy Smith crossed the finish line in 16th place and Ruben Redhair was 17th. Trent Larsen ran his career best race and took 23rd, followed by Sam Hoyle, to make 1 1 Pioneers in the top 25 of the field of nearly 100 Messersmith pushed Cara Wieser from Park City but could not pass and Wieser finally lengthened her lead to cross the finish line 24 seconds ahead of Messersmith's 20:45. At the Murray Invitational Messersmith bested Wieser, setting up an interesting contest at the state meet. Siri Brown placed 10th, with Rachael Watkins following one second behind in 11th. Watkins and Messersmith are only freshmen with some great years of running ahead of them. 0-- 0. Lehi girls ran strong to place second in the region with 57 points, behind Park City's 27. Shae The Lady Pioneers took the Panthers off their guard and matched skills throughout each play. "We proved what we thought we were," observed Lehi coach, Kevin Pederson. "This game belongs to the defense; Michele Wells, Yani Anderson, Rachel Ellis and Julie Windsor." Amber Strode and Melissa Beck got some good fast breaks and goalie Jocelyn Chamberlin made daring saves diving on top of the ball at the feet of the opposition. Jim Howe, announcer for the game, called it a phenomenal job of defense with "tenacious" being the key word. Pineview, the favored team for the 3A championship and returning state championship defenders, came in undefeated in their region. Having stomped on the Lehi team in August, the winning team was somewhat surprised. "They've improved; they are a great team," confessed Mark Cottle, Pineview coach. "We practice shootouts every practice and that is what made the difference. It's hard to win that way." The Panthers played flat according to Cottle. They lost a lead play - Porter's Place announces with pride the offensive & defensive., players of the week for the Wasatch game. Calvin on offense" and Tyler for his defensive play. Suzann Messersmith was 26th of the 60 runners. Sarah Venderhoef moved up three places for Lehi and had weeks-performanc- her best time of the year. In team scoring, Park City was first with 27 points, Lehi 57, Uintah 68, and Wasatch 79. "It is hardly a fair way to decide a game (the shootout) but that's the rules; it was a real pressure cooker," remarked Pederson. After two 10 minute overtimes the deciding play was the shoot out where five team players shoot against the opposing team's goalie and the best of five shots wins. Taking the penalty kicks to goal for Pineview were Crissy Thorpe, Jennie Barton and Cori Benson.
