Press, Review - Wed., May 29, 1991 - Page 16 Wednesday, May 29, 1891 School board honors twelve Members of the district Board of Education have honored 12 individuals for their accomplishments in educational activities. Awards were presented during the board's May 14th business meeting to students Brandon Wood, Brian Hansen, Ashley Christen sen, Wendy Thurgood, Ronald Guymon, David Mountcastle and JefT Jones. Also recognized were teachers Sherma Sondrup and Jon Thomas; and administrators Dr. Victoria Anderson, Principal Bill Delaney, and Principal John Childs. Ashley Christensen, a student at Shelley Elementary School, was named a first place winner in the 1991 statewide Arbor Day poster contest. Ashley's poster was judged the best first grade entry in the state. She was presented the first place award by Governor Norman Bangerter and Smokey the Bear on Apr. 26 at a ceremony held at Pioneer Trail State Park. Four students from American Fork Junior High School won first place in their respective divisions of history fair activities in competition with students from throughout the state. Projects this year were developed around the theme, "Rights in History," a theme chosen this year to support the celebration of the of the Bill of Rights. was Thurgood Wendy the ' presented an award in nition of the school having received the National Drug Free Recogni- tion Award sponsored by the United States Department of Education. This exclusive award is based upon the involvement of the entire munity including the schools, law enforcement, PTA, city leaders and the media. Ronald Guymon was judged best in the state in the multi-medi- a category, junior division, for his presentation entitled, "The Right of People to Read." David Mountcastle and Jeff Jones combined to win first place in the Group Project Category, senior division, with a project which they called "Black Rights." Principal Bill Delaney, PleasGrove High School principal, ant , Just three schools in Utah and the entire nation were recipient of this award. Representatives the an- nounced their retirement from education with theendoftheschool year this spring. Retiring are Sharon Beck, Director of Curriculum and Staff Development; Ray Cordner, Assistant Principal at Orem High School; Eugene Maag, Principal at Lindon Elementary; Neil Manning, Assistant Principal at Orem Junior High School; and Pat Nicholls, Principal at Orchard Elementary. The five were honored recently at a spring social sponsored by the Alpine Administrators Association. Dr. Steven Baugh, District Superintendent, praised the service of the retiring educators during their years of employment. "These individuals contributed to the happiness and success of thousfotudents," said Baugh. xney will be missed because they invested their lives in the progress of others." and Sharon Beck has been an administrator with Alpine School District since 1975. Prior to that well-bein- g she spent 20 years as a classroom teacher at Forbes, Greenwood and Hillcrest Elementary Schools. Her other administrative experience includes serving as Primary Supervisor; Supervisor of Language Arts; AssistantDirector of Elementary Schools, and Director of Bilingual Programs. She has also served as the president of the Utah Council of the International Reading Association, and president of the Jaycettes and Lady Lions, along with other civic and educational leadership positions. She is leaving education to pursue new business opportunities. Ray Cordner began his teaching career at Orem High School in the fall of 1958 in the Social Studies area. After four years of teaching, Cordner became a counselor at the school and served in that capacity for 12 years. In 1978, he became the assistant principal at Orem High School. He has been associated with all four principals who have served as administrators since Orem High School's opening in the fall of 1956. As this school year ends, Cordner will have given 33 years of service to education. Neil Manning began teaching School in 1959. There he taught English for 16 years, coached sophomore football for 10 years, was head wrestling coach for 11 years, and tennis coach for 6 of Pleasant Grove High School will go to Washington, D.C. later this year to be feted by President George at a White House reception. Bush He started his teaching career at the old Lindon School. He also taught at Lindon, Orem Junior High, " Valley View Elementary, and Union School. He served as principal as Orem Elementary for four years. "In these 30 years," he states, "I feel I have worked with the finest people in the world. Children are great. It has been a delight to go to work most of the time." Pat Nichollshas spent 26 years serving the students of Alpine School District. From 1965 through 1972, he taught at Cherry Hill Elementary. He was named the Principal at Harrington Elementary in American Fork in 1972 where he at Lehi High years. He was appointed assistant principal at American Fork Junior High in 1975. In 1983, he came to his present position at Orem Junior High. He has served with the local education association in a number of leadership capacities over the years.
