Show Sego Lily students win at regional history fair Emily Ekins, Troy Smith earn honors t 17 ""T"- - " , ; By RUSS DALY Emily Ekins earned first place honors in the Junior Division of the recent Utah Regional History Fair which was held at BYU on March iV4 ox SEED ' : I i 21. That is no small task, considering that the division includes grades v. 6-that the region covers all eligible areas south of Salt Lake, and that over 700 projects were entered 8, this year. The theme for the fair was "Science and Technology in History." Miss Ekins' entry on the developments regarding diabetes was part of the statewide competition on April , 3. -- (valuable coupon). a .. In addition to the project category, where students construct a to present their research, students were also able to present live performances, media presentations, or research papers. Students may do group work in any of the categories. Two fifth grade students, Allison Schneider and Troy SMith, earned places in the oral presentation category of the elementary division. Allison discussed the mysteries of outer space and Troy explained the history of peanuts and the several products that are made from them. These two were also able to participate in the state competition; which recognized the achievements of the elementary division. The national competition, however, does not include that group. Since judges will ask the students about their topic, their bibliography and their opinions, the students make their presentations in class, to receive a critique from their peers to ready themselves for the judges. Although the activity is part of the curriculum for this type of class, the students seem to enjoy the fruits of their hard work.
