Show Free Press - Wednesday, February 28, 1990 - Page 8 Jr. High players grab intnl. victory By TRACY WILSON International relations were on display last Friday at Lehi Jr. High School as the ninth grade boys' basketball team hosted the Cru- Yoe saders of G.C. Rowe Jr. High School in Comer Brook, Newfoundland. Although it was billed as the final game of the season for the young Pioneers of Lehi, the game turned into an opportunity for those who hadn't played much during the season to display their abilities. Lehi won the contest easily 76-4- 1 with everyone on both teams Are Invited to a Special Home Financing Seminar s getting into the fray. Lehi coach Lonnie Magnusson went to his bench early and used the boys who have been substitutes through most of the season to keep the Crusaders away from the basket and keep from "pouring it on" the visitors from Newfoundland. Josh Baum made his presence known as he scored in all three quarters he played and led the Lehi five with 13 points on two 2's, six of line and seven from the a at the final buzzer from line. Followoutside the Baum were Ryan McDonald-Col- e ing and Dan Wilson with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Regulars Jon Bailey, Richard Peterson, Eric Tadje and Matt Ekins played only one or two quarters and ended up with 9, 6, 4 and 2. free-thro- w half-cou- rt Presented by Bank of American Fork ? By quarters the Pioneers led 21-1- Place: Bank Office at 33 East Main Topics: Buying Your Home 0, and Shannon Richards, RJHS guard who was comparatively silent for three periods, came on strong near the end of the game and fired in three shots, but the die was cast and Lehi had too much lead on the Crusaders to let the hometown squad even worry. G.C.Rowe Jr. High has a student population of 450 and is one of the largest junior high schools in Newfoundland. Their trip to Utah was made to foster good will and international relations between the two countries. The boys were most interested in seeing American sports facilities, hearing cheerleaders, and experiencing the enthusiasm and loveof sport so characteristic of the United States. The Crusader team members presented the Lehi players with a pennant, a lapel pin and a button advertising the island. Lehi players, on the other hand, gave each Newfoundlander a purple Pioneer mug to take home with them in memory of the day they had in Lehi. In addition to the game versus Lehi, the young men played four other teams in Utah valley, attended a Utah Jazz game and two BYU games, skied at Park City, and spent each day sightseeing along the Wasatch Front. Some of the Lehi players have expressed the desire to return the favor by traveling to Newfoundland in the future. 38-2- 56-2- 6 76-4- 1.
