Boys basketball goes to C.E.U for region Lehi High School's boys basket- ball team played at the College of Eastern Utah in Price last night against the Union Cougars in the first round of Region 7 play to earn a spot in the state 3A tournament set for Weber State College next week. Finishingtheseason with aroad loss to Uintah, the Pioneers entered the tourney as the number six team from the region and faced Union with the winner advancing to an 8p.m. Wednesday game against the winner of Uintah and Carbon. The losers will face off at 3:30 tonight and the winner will proceed to a Thursday playoff for fourth seed to the state meet. The winner of Wednesday's 8 p.m. game will advance to state as the third seed third at state post-seaso- David Taylor and Bobby Tahbo represented Lehi High School in the final rounds of the Utah State 3A wrestling championships at Weber State College last weekend. The two seniors came home with a silver and bronze medal for their efforts. Tahbo had entered the state meet as the only region champion from Lehi. He had beaten Darlington of Uintah to claim the region gold, but Darlington was a two-tim- e champion and he wasn't to be denied this year. He won the title in the category. At 125 Taylor lost on a judge's decision after entering the state meet with a third seed from Region n third-ranke- d 185-pou- from Region 7. Winners of the regular season play, Emery and Wasatch, will square off at 8 p.m. Feb. 15 for the first and second seeds from the 7. Five other Lehi grapplers, Tyler Jeffery, Jason Fisher, Kevin Gurney, Kirk Cowan and Alan Thayn also earned a trip to the state matches, region to state. Lehi lost all but one game, a five-poi- but faltered in the early rounds and failed to finish in the money. All but Cowan and Jeffery are victory over Carbon in nt their final home contest of the year during the league schedule. Union comes into the tournament with a balanced attack composed of Tai seniors. Riser, Mike Larsen and Matt They match up height-wis- e with the Pioneers, but have a lot of quickness and extremely accurate shooting. Riser is one of the premier 3A players in the state, and he and Larsen are only juniors. Carbon and Uintah come into Carthe tournament as a toss-ubon seems to have more balance with Roger and Craig Cook leading ' the offensive attack. Carbon won5' the last time the by three, 76-7two teams played. Any way you slice it, Lehi has its work cut out in order to come through this playoff with a tournament spot ' The odds seem to be stacked against them, but with Clint Peck, a sure mention on the team, at forward, and Sam Wadley, Robert Calton and Jim Adamson putting the ball in the air from outside, the Pioneers could surprise some people. You can't leave out Chris Bailey who goes in for his share of knocks under the basket. And the Pioneer-faithfu- l have learned to expect Gary Wells, Lee Robinson and Ryan Peterson to help out when they are needed. Judd Kirkham, Chad Atwood and Jake Smith are other juniors who coach Ken Robinson -can rely on to contribute to the1 La-bru- p. JewitahiJew Pioneer effort. It has been a long season, but the Pioneers have come through it gaining a lot of experience for the next two' years. The Lehi junior varsity and sophomores won their share of games and learned to give out as much as they learned to take in the contests the won and lost. i V CITIZEN PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW LEHI FREE PRESS NO.
