Show J Free Press - Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1988-Pag- 10 e lilt 'Saturday's Warrior' : ' , " j , " . r , . , presented with twist By RUSS DALY A new revival of "Saturday's Warrior" allows the audience to participate in the show. The play opened last Friday to a nearly packed audience at Town Square Theatre in Provo's Town Square. Theatre goers will find themselves intertwined and involved in the acting that goes on. The stage is set up for acting "in the square," where actors face different parts of the audience throughout the pro- duction. That setting is what makes this play so different from the large-scal-e productions that many people have seen. Each actor brings the audience directly into the action and dialogue of the play. Jimmy, played by Randy Lofgran, sings right to audience members as he struggles to find his identity and to decide whether to remain with his family or be taken into the rebellious group. The group is led by Mack, an evil force among the other characters who seeks to destroy. Kevin Halladay's work in this role is superb. Halladay transforms his real self into his character completely, and convinces the audience of the personality of Mack. Don Richardson portrays Tod, originally a member of Mack's group who becomes converted to the gospel through the efforts of Elders Kestler and Greene. Richardson seems too meek to be a member ofthe radical group, but he uses his own personality to his advantage when he makes the transition into one who has been converted to the gospel. The antics of the two missionaries, Elder Kestler (Scott Lofgran) and Elder Greene (Bob Colomb), are amplified by their interaction with each other and with the audience. Janine Clark, who plays Pam, brings a sense of being uplifted with her character's faith and de- Let Phyllis Help You termination, and Julie (played by Amy Thomson) delights all with her naivete'. Gary Ford and Lisa Holdsworth Wintch, parents themselves, use their real-lif- e experience to bring their characters to life as Mr. and Mrs. Flinders. The audience melts during their song, "Didn't We Love Him," when Gars own son, Abraham, comes up out of the audience to portray Jimmy as a young boy. Each of the supporting actors in the roles as family members or gang members brings out his character well, and each seems to act with the audience in his own, unique way. "Saturday's Warrior" plays at 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Monday nights until Sept. 23, when it will run only on Friday and Monday nights. Saturday, Sept. 24, marks the opening of "Star Child," the sequel to "Warrior," which focuses on the lives of the missionaries upon their return at entrance to BYU.
