The overcast skies and damp weather will keep us out of the hills for a time, but the fire problems aren't over for the year not by a long shot. Many of us will still be going to the hills to hunt and to camp as soon as the weather clears up. And it won't take long for a little sunshine to restore the dangerous conditions that existed only last week, when all camp fires were The recent fall weather, including a smattering of moisture, has reduced, but not eliminated, the fire hazard in the surrounding forests. Just when it looked like there would be too many fires for a limited number of exhausted fire fighters, the weather has dampened the hazard and provided a respite for those who Cold spell has us looking for warm things - The first cold snt.llnliiaQ.iir. rying for jackets and socks. Now, we're planningour first fire in the fireplace. We were trying to keep in summer togs, now we're ferreting out ast winter's sweaters and sweat shirts. Just last week it was too hot to bake cookies. Now, we've got cookbooks out looking for recipes for stew, soup and chili. IH tell you, one of the best stew recipes is one that Eunice Watkins gave me. It's oven stew andyoujust take stewing cubes, potatoes, carrots, celery, a little onion and a can of or tomato juice. You combine all of these in your crock pot or in a roastingpan and stick it in the oven in the morning. You don't have to peek at it duringthe day. Just keep the oven or crock pot on low and you'll have a delicious stew by suppertime. You don't have to brown the meat or anything. It's so easy, yet so delicious. Another treat is nachos. After you've melted the good cheddar cheese on top of the chips, you top them with salsa and sour cream. dessert. Oh yes, you can't raise the lid while they're cooking, or the dumplings won't be light and fluffy like they should be. You just take apple slices, sugar, spice to taste, and bread crumbs. Layer them in a baking dish and bake until the apples are done. Serve it warm with ice cream, or a dip. Sometimes I just make a jello vanilla pudding, flavor it with a bit of rum flavoring and top the dessert with a sauce instead of ice cream. Applesauce cookies or cake are good this time of year. So is zucchini or pumpkin bread. Ill never forget Aunt Mabel's apple dumplings. She used to make them out of yellow transparent or astrachan apples. But any kind of cooking apples will do. She used to peel and chop the apples and cook them with sugar and a bit of water just like you make applesauce. Then she'd drop regular dumplings in the boiling apples. As we enter hunting season, all of those who find the outdoors a pleasant place to spend his or her time should take extra caution to find out where camp fires are permitted, and then to care for a legal camp fire with extra care. Too much of our precious forest land has burned this summer. All of us should work extra hard to see that no more fires of human origin plague our forests this year. Is your home still a castle? There was a time when a man could say his home is his castle and take steps to protect it from intruders. But in these days, if a man takes action against an intruder, there is a good possibility that he, not the intruder, will end up in the pokey. Try not paying your property taxes and see what happens to your castle. Some time ago I published in this column a story that was written by n Paul Harvey, the columnist. It is typical of our present time. "Once upon a time, there lived a little girl called Red Riding Hood. One day her mother asked her to take a basket of fruit to her grandmother who had been ill and who lived alone in a cottage in the forest. "It happened that day that wolf, lurking in nearby bushes, overheard the conversation and decided to take a shortcut to grandmother's practices to for the house and intercept the goodies for go they through prepare himself. game each week. I just didn't expect to find one in the local library. I visit the library often, looking for something to read or harrying the librarians about new books that aren't on the shelves yet just trying to keep them on their toes, you understand. I love to read. And to a reader, the library and the bookstore are two of the most pleasant places on earth. I read lots of different types of books, but I've had a soft spot in my mind for science fiction ever since I was in junior high school. And when I saw a new Arthur C. Clarke book (he wrote 200 1: A Space Odyssey), I was instantly intrigued. I've read most of the science fiction Clarke has written, and this one even though he with Gentry Lee, I was interested. I was also involved in three other books at the time, so I filed this one away in my memory as a possibility for my next book. A few weeks later when I went looking for the book, it came with a surprise, a small, warning taped to the book cover, which said this: This book contains sexually explicit material. It was surprising to find that on book by Arthur C. Clarke, who in a experience had never previous my written anything sexually explicit. At least nothing that was striking enough to stay in my memory. But you just don't expect to find that kind of warning in the library. I wondered if the new librarian the editor's column - hand-lettere- d , By MARC HADDOCK wasundertakingtheresponsibility of warning us about questionable material. But she assured me that the warning was placed on thebook by a patron, not an employee. How thoughtful. That's what I mean it being a warning-labe- l society. Apparently this warning business has gone so far that some of us feel comfortable labeling material for perfect strangers so it is easier to judge a book by its cover. It sure beats tearing out the offending pages, as happens at many libraries. (Iam assuming the warning was that, and not a recommendation. You just can't be sure any more.) Anyway, if this is the start of a trend, I have some suggestions for potential labels for all of those books in the library. Most of them have something that might be considered offensive. So here are a few generic warning labels to put at a convenient location in the library. Then patrons can affix the appropriate label to a suitable book. Before long, we'll all know what we are getting before we head for the circulation desk. The label already mentioned would work for a number of tomes in any library, depending on the sensibilities of the patron involved in placing the sticker. While some modern romance novels might justify that label, here is another one: This book contains basically the same plot and characters as all the other books published by this company. To avoid redundancy, read one and avoid the rest. And a reader might want to add to a few of the romance novels that are written from areligious point of view the following label: This book contains insipid characterizations, unrealistic situations, and simplistic solutions to complex human problems. number of older books, often referred to as classics, would no doubt end up with the following A label: Warning: This book is excessively boring. In fact, it is so boring it has been listed as recommended or required reading by every high school English teacher for the past 40 years. n Some books could also require a label. For example, many of the countless recent books about the dealings of the nation's Chief Executive written by close friends, family and associates might end up with this pasted on the cover: Warning: This book contains explicit personal material about the current occupant of the White House and may damage any idealistic notions held by individuals who consider him more than human. Speaking of the White House, some of the current books being written about astrology and the Zodiac might be labeled: Warning, this book contains material based on pseudo-scientifi- c theories which have been outmoded for over 2,000 years. The group's lawyers contended that killing the grandmother could be construed as inasmuch as the wolf's to 'make love, not war,' was intent and it can be reasonably assumed the grandmother resisted overtly and might, given the opportunity, have killed him. "Based on the considerations, the coroner concluded that there was no legal basis for charges against the wolf and that, in fact, the woodcutter was guilty of unaggravated assault with a deadly weapon. And so, the woodcutter was so indicted, arrested, arraigned, convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison. "The Wednesday night following the sentencing, the woodcutter's cottage was burned to the ground.
