There were 150 contestants from throughout the state and Ix'hi had the largest team there with a total of 23 competing. It was a grueling marathon with games lasting from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.. more hours than most people work each day. Nine hours is a long time for anybody to stay in one place, let alone active junior high students. Advisors were not only pleased with the brilliant chess play of the lehi students, lut with the poise and maturity of the students during the two-daevent. They did a wonderful job of representing their school and community, according to Coach Jim . Paula Findlay to become bride of Michael J. Richins in temple Michael J. The prospective groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay E. Richins, Lehi. The couple will be feted following the wedding at a wedding breakfast at the Lehi First Ward. A reception will honor them that evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Orem North East Stake Center, 575 E. 800 North. All friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend. Another star of the tournament was eighth grader Kye Nuttall. who has practiced hard all year and won five of the seven games. His national rating of 1434 gave him third place in the tournament. Kye's mother, Ingrid, was the key to Lehi's success this year, according to Coach Howe. As a teacher at the junmior high she has spent countless hours supporting student chess players throughout the year. He will be named Jordan Lee Rushton. -- as.-nint- Paula is a graduate of LDS Seminary and Orem High School where she excelled in drama and music. She will graduate from Evans Hairstyling College in September. Mike is a graduate of Lehi High School and LDS Seminary. He served in the Atlanta, Georgia LDS Mission and is now working for American Stores Property Mill. The newlyweds plan to make their first home in Orem. Proud grandparents are Joe and Lois Rushton, Lehi. and Boyd H " ' McAffee of Provo. The following students won three games each: Jasper Russell, Zane Gray, Rustin Ross, Jason Libberton, Danny Loveridge, Jason Brown, John Archer and Chris Tucker. Other students winning games were: Jason Tahbo, Lisa Miyagi, Greg Smith, Robert Powell, Jill Nattress, Greg Baird. Marci Faulk and Amber Woodcox. Lehi had more girls participating than any other team and the young ladies won a lot of games for their r team. Kveryone of Lehi's players won some games and Howe said. "What could be nicer than to go to a nament and have everyone come away a winner." All 1ehi's players are nationally rated with the United States Chess Federation and I,ehi still has one of the largest chess programs in the United States for a town of il s size. "It was a pleasure to work with these fine young ladies and gentlemen this year and I'm anxiously looking forward to next year." Mrs. Nuttall earned the team's gratitude as she did a ALL WEIGHT LOSS . . . present i job of keeping them and enthusiastic motivated throughout the long season. Principal Glen Clark has been acand very supportive commodating when the studen's needed two days off from school for this special activity. The students realize they'll have to make up the work they missed, but they do appreciate Mr. Clark's understanding in excusing them lor the tournament. The top three players for Lehi besides those mentioned above were: Christy Powell. Sonny Fraughton and Avrum McClure with four wins each. Dusty Simper had wins. Paula Findlay, Michael Richins pixxAl" wonderful y Harunori Miyagi was Lehi's top player as he won six out of the seven games. He was crowned the top" eighth grade chess player in the state. He deserved the honor as, during the tourney, he was one of the few students who recorded the moves of each game in a special chess notation and used a clock to time each move to the second. The complete text of the games will be published in the Utah Chess Association magazine. In addition, he has spent the last few weeks reading chess books and studying the games of chess grandmasters. Lehi kept up it's tradition of winning the girls championship grader, Janet Jessop. won the prestigious top award for girls. Coach Howe is looking forward to having her on the high school team next year.
