October 15, 1986 - Utah Valley Symphony begins 29th season Wed. at Provo Tabernacle Utah Valley Symphony opens its season tonight, October 15, with a gala concert in the Provo Tabernacle at 8 p.m. under the direction of Conductor Ralph G. Laycock. Pianist Jeffrey Shumway is soloist. 1986-8- 7 Three composers, Rossini, Schumann and Tchaikovsky, were chosen by Dr. Laycock for a program entirely 19th century from three different nations and musical traditions. Beverley Dunford, symphony business manager, says, "This is the symphony's 29th season. Both the conductor and the nearly 100 musicians feel with Dr. Laycock's guidance a promise of an extraordinary year. Several new players this year enhance the experience and abilities of the regulars. And. Doug Furr, symphony president, and Sue Ann Cochran, president of the symphony guild are enthusiastically supporting us." Dr. Shumway, the evening's piano soloist, is a prize winning Gina Bachauer competitor, and recent addition to the BYU music faculty where he has been appointed to assume the position of recently retired Reid Nibley. Russian Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, was born 50 years after Rossini and 30 after Schumann. He lived almost into the 20th century. He composed this concluding piece on the Utah Valley Symphony's concert, "Piano minor," Concert No. 1 in while teaching at the Moscow Conservatory. Originally written for his friend Anton Rubenstein it was published dedicated to Hans von Bulow who premiered it in Boston. The concerto was very modern in composition at the time it was written. Rubenstein at first declared it unplayable but later relented and performed it many times after apologizing to Tchaikovsky. at Rossini's Overture "L'italiane in Algeri" (The Italian Girl in Algiers) will open the program. Lively and ' melodic, it was written when Italian-bor- n Rossini was only 21. Second on the program is Robert Schumann's "Symphony No. 4 in It is considered by many to be high highest achievement. Shumway did his undergraduate at BYU, received his MA at Julliard, where he studied with Irwin Freundlich, and received his Ph.D. at Indiana University where he studied with Alfonso Montecino. He has a long record of successful performances. His modest, quiet demeanor hides a fire of talent and ability which should delight the audience.
