Twelve teams participated in the meet. Three team members out of five had to win to move on to the finals each night. V Darren Jones returns from basketball tour. 'Aussie's pumpkin soup delicious Darren Jones says Lehi Despite playing on linoleum covered and cement floors, Darren Jones enjoyed his participation as a member of the Utah All Star Sports Group and a basketball tour of Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti. .He was an all star for. the 19 and under team. There were 10 members of each jeam, but, according to the handsome 2 blonde youth from Lehi, ''Coach Steinke saw to it that eVerybody got an equal amount of playing time." Their status earned the respect of most boys in each country they toured. "Kids, eight'&nd nine years old, and players came out of the stands to talk, to us. They 'acted like they respected us. They'd "ap- -. plaud our baskets as much as their home team. We felt right at home.' One of Darren's favorite places was Woolengong, a suburb off Sydney, Australia, where he stayed with the samefamily for five days. "I got really atttached to, that family!" They treated me just' like kid one of them. One little followed us around.!' Darren's roommate was LaDell Eyre from Beaver. "We became close friends. "There was some conflict at first, but we came together as a team and became good friends. Matt will probably get to play against some of those guys this year," Darren said, acknowledging his friend, also a member of the 1985 Utah State Championship Basketball team, and who was a member of the 17 and under All Star team.. Many of the All Stars had been adversaries before the tour, and they didn't know what to expect when they'd begin playing together. "The first game wasn't as competitive as we expected. It was on a linoleum floor." Darren thinks that, despite the rigorous schedule, he put on weight during the tour. "The food was mostly vegetables, even pumpkin spup, I'd never tasted that before. It was kind of weird, but good. I like the desserts, too," he said. "Their milkshakes were the trifle just that, thin milk. I liked they served. "It was a real fun trip. It opened my eyes about how different our customs and cultures are. I'll always remember how green it was in New Zealand. Australia was more like the United States. : Darren said that Levis cost $40 in Australia. A pair bf basketbll shoes that would cost $40 or $50 here, would cost $160 there. Some of his memories are a voyage to another island near Tahiti. They traveled aboard a ferry with Darren sitting near the prow, or the front where he could wateh the 30 foot waves threaten the voyagers. 6-- All-St- ar They docked at the other island only to discover that the beach was manmade. The disappointment of not seeing a beautiful beach with swaying palms and pearly seashells, may have helped caused Landlubber Darren to have a .' dreadful case of seasickness on the way back to the main Island of Tahiti. j Oh yes, another. indignity! Darren got lost on the Island! That boat ride turned out to be a less than pleasant experience for the young man from Lehi. "The whole thing was a valuable expeience,".i Darren commented. "And yes, the cutest girls are from Y right here in the U.S." v ; One experience that stands out in Darren's mind, is when he had the opportunity to go snorkeling amid the coral and exotic fish that inhabit the oceans around Tahiti. "That was a fantastic experience. It was expensive, but worth every penny it ;' cost."- - : .' on a to called be Darren expects mission for the IDS Church. ' "The people were friendly. We had to get used to their accent and I had to look right at them when they talked or I couldn't understand them. Even though they speak English, they talk so fast and with an accent," he said. He didn't get homesick during the month-lon- g tour. "They kept us so busy, we didn't have a chance to get homesick." Darren also expressed his appreciation to the people who helped by donating toward his trip. "I really want to thank everyone who contributed toward my trip. It's been a very valuable experience and I appreciate the opportunities I've had."- '- Heard any NEWS lately?
