Fork 1985 - Page 9 Heard any NEWS lately? spurts CALL 768-969- 6 Friday and Monday Lehi loses to Morgan, will battle Union Thursday For everything that went right in Lehi's football game against Wasatch Oct. 4, something went wrong at Morgaji last Wednesday. In an attempt to salvage part of the Region 9 crown, the Pioneers succumbed to the fired-u- p Trojans who now fight Grantsville for the first seed in the approaching state 2A playoffs. Lehi was unable to penetrate the Morgan goalline even though they accumulated 10 first downs to the Trojans' 11. Part of the fault has to lie with the inability of the offense to move the ball on the ground. For the game, the Pioneers were a minus 5 yards on 23 running plays. Bryce Peterson saved total team embarrassment by throwing for 116 yards on 25 attempts for 40 percent, but he was sacked three times for minus 35 yards. Chris Price connected on his only pass, to John Hadfield, for 37 yards. Silila Perez was the leading ground gainer with a measly 9 yards. Price hauled in seven passes for 75 yards, followed by Reid Swenson's 3 for 41 and Hadfield's 1 for 37. By contrast, Morgan ran 47 plays from scrimmage for 193 yards, but completed only one of 15 passes for 15 yards. The Trojans had only 63 more yards than the Pioneers, and the game was decided on turnovers and missed calls by the officials. The first of those "questionable" situations came in the first series for Morgan when a pass was possessed and then dropped. In the scramble for the ball, an official 30 yards away and out of sight of the ball, blew his whistle and killed the play while the ball was still loose on the ground with two Lehi players bearing down on it and only the tackled Morgan player near it for them. The Trojans then drove to the Lehi 1 and lost the ball on downs, but it was not a total loss as they then caught Peterson in the end zone for a safety and two points on the ensuing series. A second bad call came on the second play of the next quarter when Trevor Powell punted to the Morgan 15 where the ball bounced off a Trojan receiver, but the touching went unnoticed by the official and the ball was taken away even though Lehi possessed it after the touching. Two Morgan drives were stopped by interceptions. Peterson stepped in front of a Trojan receiver and returned four yards on the first, while Hadfield went high for an aerial to stymie another drive at the 36. Lehi attempted two field goals, from the 25 and the 18. The first was wide and the second was a fake all the way with Peterson attempting a pass. The aerial was overthrown and Morgan took over at their own 8. Lehi's defense played fairly tough with only four of Morgan's 47 attempted carries going for more than nine yards. They actually lost yardage on four attempts including sack by Chad Fenn, and a five-yar- d a second by Fenn and Jeff Hill for minus 8. The Pioneer pass defense was extremely sticky. In addition to the two interceptions, there were 12 other passes that failed to find their mark or were jarred loose before "possession" by one of Morgan's defenders. Morgan's scoring began with 6:07 in the first period on the safety following Swenson's stop of the Trojan runner at the one. Their first TD came as a result of the pass interception to open the second half, and their final trip into the end zone series was at the end of a (including Lehi's punt fumble) that took eight minutes and 13 seconds of the final quarter. If anyone on the Lehi team could be singled out as contributing to the effort, it would have to be Peterson. Not only did he call 49 plays, completing 40 percent of his 26 passes for 116 yards, but he was the leading tackier with 11 unassisted instops and three assists, and that stopped a tercepted a pass drive. Trojan The loss was a bitter pill for the Pioneers to swallow, but they still have Union at home (Thursday at 4 p.m. because of the deer hunt) to think about, and all is not lost with the defeat at Morgan's hands. Actually finishing in third place in the region is not such a bad idea, as it puts the Pioneers in the same bracket with Morgan and opposite the No. Richfield Wildcats of Region 10. assuming that Grantsville will lose to the Trojans and go in as No. 2 from Region 9, the Trojans will then go into the same bracket as Lehi, Delta and Manti as the favorites. In the upper bracket, Emery (or Park City) and South Sevier have to square off against Richfield and Grantsville. Lehi would love a chance to even the score against the Trojans, and it "will not be anything like last week's game," commented some Pioneers, looking for a real battle. for theyear, has been Union, an team all season with a 44-- win over Grantsville in the opener, and successive losses to and Park City, Morgan, last week. The match-u- p will be a home game for the Pioneers, and they are not used to losing at home this season with wins over Park City and Wasatch and a home-gam- e win streak of two. Three wins (including Union) against one home loss should give Lehi the home-fieladvantage in a projected match-uagainst the No. 7 team (currently Juab) from Region 10. A feature of the Union-Leh- i halftime will be the raffling of a nice quilt by the PTSA. Tickets are available from PTSA members or at the gate the afternoon of the game. first-roun- d Now there is a place meet that can your framing needs, just around the corner: Bowers Mat & Frame provides: die-har- d ALL 3 Photo frames and folios 6 Custom framing for artwork, posters, needlework and certificates Large selection of mats So don't travel far and wide to buy your next frame, come to fnX d p 139 east main street Mas: i; Jayvees (Continued from page 8) Morgan had their chance from the but Tanner and linebacker Mike Wilson would have none of it, so on fourth and 10 the Morgan punter got boomer. J.B. off a dandy Snith returned for seven to his own 39. Again Price went to the deep passing well but was intercepted, e and this time near the field returned to Lehi's 25. A goal attempt fell short, but was fumbled by Lehi, and Morgan had one more chance at the Lehi 8. One carry was good for only six yards and the half ended. 20, 109 E. 100 N. AMERICAN FORK 756-760- 1 mid-strip- A, classic "Knute Rockne" halftime speech by Coach Ed Achziger so infuriated the boys that anyone standing near the locker-roodoor was in danger when they came out for the second half. Morgan made the mistake of kicking off the second half. They would have been better off to take their ball and go home. In five plays, with two minutes and 22 seconds gone, Price hit Peck with what has become almost an "automatic" TD pass good for 42 yards. Leading up to the touchdown, Tanner had carried for three and Cunningham had followed suit. A seven-yar- d pass to Peck and d screen pass to a minus Cunningham set up the scoring bomb to Peck. Tanner's PAT was no good and Morgan still enjoyed a margin (of victory, but not of safety). With the good field position, Cunningham carried three times for 14 yards, with Tanner gaining 18 on two attempts. Again, bring on the this Price to Peck aerial show time for 26 yards and the TD with 1:44 remaining in the third period. A conversion pass was 12-- 7 incomplete and Lehi had the lead. m FAKLER'S BIAS TMirrf METMEAIlC iivvn iikiiitnvifK No Retreadable Trade-i- n Required! They earned two first downs on passes, but had fourth and 32 when they threw for only 28, thanks to a fine defensive effort by Harold Barnes. Lehi just sat on the ball the last four downs with four carries for net four yards. Against Wasatch two weeks ago Cunningham had gained 70 yards for a 7.8 per carry average, and Price had completed 52 percent of his 31 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns. Scott Peck caught eight for 160 yards and Phillips was credited with 11 tackles (8 unassisted). Price passed to Darin Davis for the first score with 5:55 left in the first period. Lehi scored three TD's in the second half with Peck hauling in a heave, Mercer catching and Davis the another final tally for 16 yards. None of the PAT's were good, but Lehi had the 24-- 0 final score. ' Defensively the young Pioneers held the Wasps to 98 yards on 33 carries and four passes. Offensively they ran up 100 yards on 26 carries and 275 yards on 17 of 35 passes.
