What Is The Problem? Brown or yellow stains sometimes show up on a garment after it has been cleaned and pressed - or after a season of storage. What Does The Damage Look Like? The stain may be yellow, tan or brown depending on its age and on the staining substance. Note the tear-dro- p shape of the stain in the picture. What Caused It? Fruit juice, beer and soft drinks like ginger ale spilled on a garment often leave no visible stain, but contain natural or reducing sugars which remain in the fabric if not flushed out with water. Usually drycleaning does not remove them, since they are soluble in water rather than drycleaning solvent. Heat in a dryer or in pressing - or the heat of storage in a warm closet - turn the sugars brownish in color. How Can It Be Prevented? If the drycleaner knows it's there, he can tiusn u oui wun water, bui since these stains are not visible at one-tw- two-spee- JaUai4 Z Z I00W. Am.rl.an Ftrk Who Is Responsible? The person who spilled the juice. Or the customer who failed to report it to the drycleaner in time. Remedy: Once they become visible, such stains usually cannot be removed from silk, wool and sometimes nylon. In other fabrics bleaching may lighten them enough that they are not noticeable. f y - f Vs.
