Show Free Press - Thursday. August UDO tells pt, 1984 - Page 12 concern over bridge work Utah Department of Transportation engineers are concerned that a new process used to repair bridge decks along Interstate 15 in Utah County might not work as intended. In a news release, the department says that new pavement applied to bridge decks in Davis County earlier this summer has begun to show displacement in spots. Core samples taken from the deck between Pages Lane and Lagoon on show the fabric installed in the pavement has not adhered to the asphalt. UDOT crews are removing a test section of the deck to evaluate why the process did not meet expectations. The work is similar to bridge work in Utah taking place now along County from Lehi to Provo. The news release stresses that the bridges are structurally sound and that the problems only involve the pavement on the bridge decks. The fabric which appears to be causing the problem is part of a new process designed to seal out moisture and prevent corrosion in the reinforcing steel in the bridges' concrete deck. Preliminary core samples from some of the bridge decks indicate the fabric is not bonding to the asphalt as it should. "If the fabric tears under stress, water could then trickle through the membrane and into the reinforcing steel and cause potholes," the news release reports. Original plans called for using the fabric on 112 bridge decks scheduled for work this summer and next construction season. In addition to Utah County, the bridge decks are in Salt Lake, Davis and Weber county. So far, the UDOT reports, 38 bridge decks have had all or part of their decks sealed in the new The process. waterproofing department said it plans to take samples from each of the 38 decks to evaluate the process and determine if it is effective. Bridges that show a problem will be closely monitored, the news release said. While the process involving the fabric has been used before in Utah, the UDOT will continue work on other bridge decks scheduled for completion this year using an alternate process which has been used successfully in the past. That process will replace the waterproof membrane and fabric with a rubber mat. Meanwhile UDOT engineers will continue testing and analyzing the new process. The release says the waterproof membrane has worked effectively in the past on cracked roads in Utah, but this is the first time the state has used the process on bridge decks, although other states have had success with the process on bridges. "It was felt that this process would save the taxpayers dollars by providing a more efficient moisture seal thus extending the length of time between repairs on bridge decks," the UDOT reports. "We are in a new era in bridge deck repairs," said UDOT Director D. William Hurley.
