Show ftw Vnm - Wednesday, January 26, 1984 - Page 2 (EmmBmtt New requirement for graduation will improve Alpine education The Alpine School District's plan to increase graduation requirements is one more step that will restore the confidence of parents and patrons in the district's ability to educate local students. The increased requirements, when approved, will be the next logical step for the district. Last year, school board officials increased the number of courses high school students could take when they gave schools the option of a seven-o- r le. By increasing the graduation requirements, the board will give students an incentive to use the increased course offerings --especially in the senior year, which has become a mute exercise for some students who have completed most of their graduation requirements and are simply biding their time until commencement. The recommendations increase requirements in several areas, including English, and add a fine arts or foreign language requirement. : The district is also considering requiring a demonstration of computer literacy as a prerequisite to graduation. of consideration stiffer Alpine's graduation comes on the heels of an increase in requirements requirements by the Utah Board of Education. But the Alpine District has, in some cases, gone beyond the state board. If adopted, the new requirements will be phased in through 1988, when students will have to earn 8 high school credits to graduate instead of the 20 units now 27-2- - required. At a time when there is so much discussion and criticism about education, the proposed graduation requirements being considered by the Alpine School District are an indication that the district has the means to improve the quality of education students are receiving. c letters to the editor to received I Recently By BETTY FOWLER We were among the people who were awakened in the middle of the night three years ago and ordered -to evacuate our home and seek identify themselves their so an concerns might be followed up and anonymous letter from a citizen of appropriate action taken. And it was a journey of paradoxes. The little ones had been put to bed and the two older daughters were stalling for time before they met a similar fate. It's a scene we play out night after night. But tonight was different.' Mom was gone, and they knew they could getaway with it. The oldest, a third grader whose interest in reading had blossomed before kindergarten, grown in the first grade and lately waned alarmingly, had started showing renewed interest in books. The second, a first grader, has 1 grasped her new ability to read with an enthusiasm that astounds me. She reads constantly when she is at home. She reads old books and new books. And she had just brought a new one home from the library. And I had been captivated with a book that was taking me someplace I'd always wanted to go. So I jumped at the chance to sit down on the couch with the two of them, cover up with our wool blanket, and just read - each of us enjoying the physical closeness while the books took our minds far away from each other.
