None of them could describe a single experience in which they felt a teacher had reached out with compassion and tenderness and tried to understand and help them. Could it be that John's actions were a simple cry for attention? John's teacher made a personal vow that John would not go by the wayside, if she could help it. On the way back to John's house that day she told him how worried everyone had been about him. She assured him that his parents loved him and that she did too, Since that time, John's teacher has spent time encouraging him and helping he and his parents away from school. away from them. Instead they called his principal at school. Together with the principal they hunted for John with no success. Finally, the principal called John's teacher. She remembered seeing him leave school the day before with a student from another grade. She called the student's parents and discovered that John had stayed over that night. Within a few minutes the teacher picked John up at the friend's house and returned him to his parents. Teachers are not called upon to help in problems of this magnitude everyday, but most can be solved much easier when parents and teachers work together. He is constantly in trouble both at home and at school and it would appear he is a compulsive thief, he has stolen such items as a sleeping bag, stereo and then a car, just to name a few. For the first week and a half of school, John went to school with money for lunch, but rather than spend his own money he took a sack lunch from another student. This way he could keep his money to spend on other things, perhaps treats and entertainment after school. Why does John do the things he does and what causes him to fall short of the potential he has? There may be a number of reasons, maybe part of it is the pain suffered when he found his brother dead. Since that time John has always been a loner. He may have one or two friends, but overall he doesn't let people get close to him emotionally.
