Show Citizen, Review, Press, Thurs Sept. 1, 1983 - Page 19 The basics of weed control are simple and highly important as the summer progresses. Prevent as many as possible in the future by not allowing them to go to seed now, says Duane Hatch, extension horticulturist with Utah State University. Every weed that goes to seed in your garden adds years of toil. Don't be afraid to go after them with a hoe. Hatch recommends a push-pu- ll type hoe that works just below the soil surface, clipping off the roots without turning over soil and creating good germinating conditions for more to sprout. He says mechanical control usually works better than chemical control in the growing vegetable garden. A wide range of vegetables in most gardens often makes it impractical to use chemicals such as Dacthal and Treflan designed to control certain weeds among certain crops. The use of any chemical necessitates carefully reading and heeding the guideline instructions on the label. "If you use a herbicide," Hatch cautions, "realize that it is a plant Again the "Alps of the West" will ring with the sounds of yodeling and folk music at the annual Midway Swiss Days on Sept. 2 and 3. This ethnic festival has become a tradition. Centered around Midway's chalet-styl- e Town Hall, the festivities include an auction, two parades ( 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday), yodelers Anna Rindlisbacher and Arthur Brogli, accordionist and vocalist Janet Todd, the Post Office Band, the Heidi Puppet Show, Midway Children's Chorus and Swiss Folk Dancers. half-timber- killer. You must decide which is the weed and which is the desirable plant and apply it accordingly because the herbicide won't know the difference." Glyphosate, a chemical absorbed by green growing plants, kills nearly all plants when sprayed or wiped on the leaves and green shoots. Though it is quite expensive, Hatch says it has become one of the most used chemicals in agriculture and home gardening. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, 40; Knock-Ou6.6; Kleenup, It will take from 4 to 10 days in warm weather and from 10 to 14 days in cool weather before you notice its yellowing effects on the leaf tips indicating that the plants are dying. Students and individuals in the community can use the equipment Hatch says season-lon- g weed control requires constant vigilance. Avoid letting weeds spread, mature and drop a lot of seed. He was trying to find out everything he could about lightning, and he did, according to this month's issue of "Ranger Rick," the children's publication of the National Wildlife Federation. But he realized he could have been killed electricity in lightning.
