Show DIVERSE TIMES - FEBRUARY 15, 1996 - 5 a few things I’ve either discovered, want to know more about, or wish I could do. Please feel free to correct me for any errors, add insight or experience, or just ask questions I can try to find answers for. This can only be as good as the input it gets, and I know that sometimes taking the time to respond to things, either in writing or even with a phone call, gets put way down on our list of "Things To Do.” However, I really don’t want this to be just a repetition of things you could get in a gardening magazine so I need your input to tailor—make the ideas and suggestions for our very unique area Some topics I’d like to cover include composting, growing specific vegetables and flowers, tips for living with the local varmints (that’s the deer and rabbits, not your next-door neighbor!), companion plantings, GARDEN GRAB BAG —by Rusty Salmon This is just an introduction to me and to an idea whichI hope you will consider worthwhile and enjoyable. I have read this Newsletter for the last year and been thinking that this someone’s spectacular successes, etc. If possible I’m going to try to find those people who have mastered certain specialties and interview them for some real “hands-on” advice. So if you are one of these people or know of valley has many people in it, both oldtimers and new someone I should talk to please call me and let me know. Additionally, I’ll try to present some general ideas and plans arrivals like me. In this group there are knowledgeable people who have spent many hours learning all the tricks of that have been used by others around the country to get good results. Maybe we can even set up a seed and cuttings getting good house plants, flower gardens, and crops in this very special environment. If you read any of the popular magazines, you will note that they tend to relate to that “perfect” environment which we would all like to be gardening in but, unfortunately, we have late frosts, deer and rabbits, sandy and alkaline soil, and hot dry days of summer that steal every bit of moisture that the soil can release. Yet, with a little perseverance, work and determination, I’m sure section where we can share our excess with our neighbors (Does anybody ever really plant all the squash seeds in the packet?) or share resources for obtaining those odd and rare varieties which are becoming so popular. This is a new experience for me as I have only done writing for professional scientific journals before, and we don’t want this to be that dry! My husband and I have only that almost anything can and will grow here. I have seen some examples of marvelous gardens and know that there are many more. At some point, I realized that this would be a perfect place to have a fonim where we could share ideas and plans and, at the same time, beautify our environment. I do not intend to imply thatI am an expert of any type and especially not in this field! However, I am an avid student and willing to learn and also share anything that I lived full time in this area for a little over 14 months, but we’ve been coming to Moab for years. And, although we live in Castleton, we feel like we are part of the valley community. This could be an interesting learning experience for me and I hope you will enjoy and be able to use what I want to try to do with this column. My phone number is 259-4044 and my address is HC 64 Box 2012 for those who would rather write. I hope to hear from many of learn. So I’m going to be putting this column together with you!
